Awlgrip J3809Q Awlwood MA Clear Primer Quart - Marine Wood Finish

The Awlgrip Awlwood MA Clear Primer (J3809Q) is the foundation of the Awlwood MA two-step exterior clear coating system, designed to deliver a superior, long-lasting finish on bare wood surfaces above the waterline. Used in combination with the Awlwood MA Clear Topcoat Finish, this primer creates a synergistic system that bonds directly to the wood's cellular structure for extended protection and lasting beauty.

Powered by Awlgrip's proprietary Flex-Link™ technology, the primer forms deep cross-links within the wood's molecular structure — including dense tropical hardwoods — ensuring an exceptional bond that flexes and moves with the wood. The result is unrivaled resistance to delamination and a permanent, flexible foundation that outlasts traditional marine varnish systems.

Key Features:

• Deeply penetrates wood grain and cellular structure, even on tropical hardwoods, for long-lasting color stability and superior system adhesion
• Flex-Link™ polymer technology chemically bonds to the wood structure, delivering superior flexibility and outstanding resistance to delamination at impact or damage points
• Allows the natural color and grain of the wood to shine through for a rich, authentic appearance
• Contains high-performance colorants that impregnate the wood structure to mimic and sustain natural wood tones as UV exposure causes natural pigments to fade
• Serves as the critical bonding layer for the Awlwood MA Clear Topcoat Finish (gloss or satin), sold separately
• Does not require thinning; theoretical coverage approximately 400 ft²/gallon; 45% solids by volume
• Can be overcoated in as little as 1.5 to 4 hours, minimizing project downtime
• Available in Clear (J3809Q), Red (J7809Q), and Yellow (J9809Q) primer bases

The Awlwood MA system is engineered for boaters and marine professionals who demand a finish that retains the same gloss, DOI (distinctness of image), and natural wood appearance coat after coat — season after season — with longer periods between re-coats compared to conventional varnish.
