3M: Over a Century of Innovation for Automotive Professionals

Few names carry as much weight in automotive finishing and surface preparation as 3M. Founded in 1902 as the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company and headquartered in Maplewood, Minnesota, 3M has grown from a small mining venture into one of the world's most diversified technology companies — producing more than 55,000 products across industries ranging from healthcare to electronics to transportation. For generations of body shop technicians, professional detailers, and serious DIYers, 3M has been a cornerstone of the garage and the collision repair bay alike.

A Complete System for Paint Finishing

What sets 3M apart in the automotive world is the depth and cohesion of their product ecosystem. Rather than offering isolated items, 3M engineers integrated systems where every product works in concert with the next. Their lineup of paint compounds exemplifies this philosophy — the Perfect-It™ and Trizact™ families are formulated specifically to remove oxidation, sand scratches, and swirl marks, setting the stage for a flawless finish. These compounds are designed to work hand-in-hand with 3M's own buffing pads and polishing tools for predictable, repeatable results.

Once the surface has been compounded, a quality polish is the next step to bringing out true depth and gloss. 3M's Finesse-it™ and Perfect-It™ polish lines are staples in both OEM facilities and independent body shops, engineered to eliminate compound swirl marks and restore a rich, show-car shine to clear coats and baked refinish paints.

Abrasives Built for Precision

3M's reputation in abrasives technology is arguably unmatched in the industry. Their broad catalog of sanding discs includes innovations like Cubitron™ II Precision Shaped Ceramic Grain — a triangular mineral designed to slice through substrates rather than gouge them, resulting in faster cutting and dramatically longer disc life. The Xtract™ net disc series takes things further by allowing up to 97% dust extraction during sanding, creating a cleaner and healthier work environment. Whether you need Hookit™ or Stikit™ attachment styles, coarse stock removal or ultra-fine finishing grades, 3M has a disc engineered for the task.

Behind every great sanding disc is the right tool, and 3M's line of sanders is purpose-built to get the most from their abrasive technology. From compact orbital sanders designed to address small paint defects to full-size air-powered tools for larger panels, 3M sanders are engineered to pair seamlessly with their disc and pad systems.

Protecting What Matters Most

Paint correction is only half the battle — protecting a vehicle's finish from future damage is equally important. 3M's Scotchgard™ Paint Protection Film, available as a hood guard and in a variety of coverage configurations, is a nearly invisible polyurethane film that shields painted surfaces from stone chips, bug damage, road tar, UV radiation, and scratches. Trusted by OEM manufacturers and aftermarket installers alike, 3M Paint Protection Film is backed by a robust manufacturer's warranty and represents decades of materials science expertise applied directly to the problem of keeping vehicles looking their best.

Why Professionals Choose 3M

Integrated product systems — compounds, polishes, abrasives, and tools designed to work together

Proprietary abrasive technologies like Cubitron™ II and Trizact™ microreplicated minerals

A massive product catalog spanning over 5,000 SKUs for automotive applications

Trusted by OEM assembly facilities, collision repair shops, and professional detailers worldwide

Consistent innovation backed by over 120 years of materials science research
