Permatex: Over a Century of Automotive Chemical Innovation

Few brands in the automotive world can claim a founding story as memorable as Permatex. In 1909, company founder Constant A. Benoit attended an endurance race near his Brooklyn laboratory and watched helplessly as car after car pitted with blown head gaskets. He applied his experimental gasket cement to a struggling race car, and the vehicle finished the entire 24-hour event without another gasket failure. That moment launched one of the most enduring names in automotive maintenance chemistry.

Today, Permatex is a leading manufacturer, distributor, and marketer of premium chemical products serving the automotive maintenance and repair market — as well as marine, heavy-duty, and off-highway industries. Operating under the ITW umbrella, the brand has grown from a single gasket compound into a comprehensive portfolio of chemical tools trusted by professional technicians and passionate DIYers alike around the globe.

A Full Arsenal of Chemical Solutions

At the heart of the Permatex lineup are its legendary gasket sealants, a category the brand essentially helped pioneer. From the iconic Permatex Blue Silicone — which became the best-selling blister-carded chemical item in the American auto parts business — to modern RTV formulations like Ultra Black and The Right Stuff, these products fill microscopic imperfections in mating surfaces to create leak-proof seals that hold up under extreme heat, pressure, and vibration.

Beyond gasketing, the brand's gasket makers, sealants, and removers expand the toolkit further, covering anaerobic compounds, form-in-place gaskets, and dedicated surface prep removers that help technicians achieve a clean, reliable seal every time. Whether you're rebuilding a classic engine or servicing a modern turbocharged powerplant, Permatex offers a formulation engineered for the task.

Threaded fasteners are another area where Permatex delivers essential solutions. The brand's threadlockers are designed to prevent bolts and screws from backing out due to vibration while simultaneously sealing against gases and liquids — a combination critical in high-vibration applications like suspension components, exhaust systems, and engine accessories. Permatex even offers a unique hybrid thread compound that combines the sealing power of a thread sealant with the holding strength of a threadlocker in a single product.

After the wrench work is done, Permatex's Fast Orange line of hand cleaners has become a shop staple in its own right. Formulated to cut through grease, oil, and heavy shop grime, these waterless and pumice-infused cleaners are tough on contaminants while remaining gentle on skin — a balance that has made Fast Orange one of the most recognized names in professional hand care.

Rounding out the chemical toolkit, Permatex solvents and thinners provide the surface preparation and cleanup solutions that make every other repair step more effective. Proper surface cleaning is the foundation of any lasting seal or bond, and Permatex formulates its cleaners to meet the demands of professional repair environments.

Proven Across Racetracks and Repair Bays

Permatex has long used motorsport as a proving ground for its products. From early Daytona Beach road course victories built around Form-A-Gasket to NASCAR legends assembling engines entirely with Permatex and Loctite compounds, the brand's race-proven heritage translates directly into the reliability that professionals and enthusiasts expect. With over 350 products, approximately 1,200 SKUs, and distribution across more than 85 countries, Permatex remains one of the most trusted names in automotive chemical tools — more than a century after that pivotal pit stop in Brooklyn.

Product Details

Permatex Form-A-Gasket #2 is a slow-drying, non-hardening sealant specifically designed for sealing cut gaskets and stamped metal parts. This flexible formula remains pliable to accommodate minor movement and thermal expansion, while providing a reliable seal that prevents leaks without the brittleness of traditional hardening gasket compounds.

Key Features:

 • Non-hardening formula allows for easy disassembly and gasket reuse when maintenance is required
 • Wide temperature range of -65?F to 400?F (-54?C to 204?C) for versatile applications
 • Resists common shop fluids, fuels, oils, and automotive chemicals
 • Ideal for use on valve covers, oil pans, timing covers, and other stamped or cut gasket applications
 • Slow-drying formulation provides extended working time for proper positioning
 • 3 oz. tube size convenient for multiple applications

This gasket sealant is particularly useful in applications where sealing is more important than extreme rigidity, making it an essential addition to any automotive, marine, or powersports toolbox. Apply a thin, even coat to both surfaces and allow appropriate tack time before assembly.

I recently ordered 2 Borla Dual Round Intercooled Tips from Autoplicity.com for one reason and reason only...their prices can not be beat! No where else online can anyone match them!
Best prices, fast shipping, good service. Thank you!

Was looking online for the best price on a part and found that autoplicity had the lowest price and free shipping on it. I ordered it and it was shipped the next day along with tracking number. I will be ordering a few more parts from autoplicity. Order Number: 27769

I have placed orders with Autoplicity 3 times in the last 2 months, and have received excellent delivery, pricing and customer service in every instance. Thanks!

** Update 4/18/2012
Everything arrived in several different shipments. I did experience a problem with some FelPro Headbolts that I had ordered. I ordered two and only received one, but after a short phone call with Paul from shipping, the problem was fixed and my second set of bolts were shipped.

They had the cheapest price that I could find on several products. I did not like the order confirmations on there website as I had to copy and paste to search for my tracking number. I am supposed to receive my order today and I am scared because the two weights do not match up. Autoplicity says 37.7 pounds and fedex says 3.8 pounds. Maybe there is more than one tracking number and I just do not know.
