About C. Sherman Johnson Co., Inc.

Few names carry as much weight in the world of marine rigging as C. Sherman Johnson. Founded in 1958 by Curtiss S. Johnson Jr., the company began with a sailor's passion and a single brilliant invention. As the story goes, Johnson designed the original Handy Lock Turnbuckle as a side project, and after years of part-time marketing, the product's reception was strong enough that he left a career in engineering management to build a full line of stainless steel marine fittings. That leap of faith paid off — today, C. Sherman Johnson is widely recognized as America's #1 manufacturer of stainless steel cable fittings for marine and architectural applications.

From its East Haddam, Connecticut base, the company has remained family-owned and operated across multiple generations. What started with a focus on the marine industry eventually expanded in the 1980s into architectural hardware for cable railing systems. Today, C. Sherman Johnson's products can be found everywhere from offshore sailboats racing under ISAF rules to commercial architectural installations and even U.S. Military applications.

What Sets C. Sherman Johnson Apart

The defining characteristic of C. Sherman Johnson hardware is its uncompromising commitment to American manufacturing and material quality. Every marine product is made in the USA from marine-grade Type 316 stainless steel — a grade specifically chosen for its superior corrosion resistance in saltwater environments. This dedication to domestic production allows the company to maintain tight quality control and deliver consistent performance in demanding conditions, season after season.

Their turnbuckles are the foundation of the product line and remain the industry benchmark for sailboat rigging. Whether tensioning standing rigging on a blue-water cruiser or fine-tuning a dinghy's shrouds, C. Sherman Johnson offers configurations to match virtually any application — tubular, open-body, jaw, hook, and welded eye styles across a wide range of thread sizes. Complementing the rigging lineup are eye straps and pad eyes, including their popular hinged pad eye designs that provide secure and versatile attachment points throughout the boat.

Onboard organization and safety depend on more than just rigging. C. Sherman Johnson's broader hardware parts and accessories catalog covers clevis pins, cotter rings, link plates, gate eyes, grab rail components, fender cleats, and more — the small but essential pieces that hold a well-rigged boat together. Boaters who work with Dyneema or synthetic lifelines will also appreciate the brand's purpose-built rigging tapes, including their mast boot tape designed to protect lines and fittings from the elements.

Rounding out the lineup, C. Sherman Johnson also produces anchor accessories and related marine fittings that address the practical challenges of anchoring and docking. Whether you're outfitting a new build or upgrading aging hardware on an existing vessel, the breadth and depth of the C. Sherman Johnson catalog makes it a go-to resource for serious sailors and powerboaters alike.

Trusted by Designers, Builders, and Owners

C. Sherman Johnson hardware has earned the trust of OEM sailboat manufacturers, professional riggers, and recreational boaters for more than six decades. The company's continuing ability to design, manufacture, and distribute products that hold up in the harshest marine environments has cemented their reputation as the industry's number-one supplier of lifeline fittings. For anyone who takes their time on the water seriously, C. Sherman Johnson represents hardware you can count on.

Product Details

The C. Sherman Johnson 27-406 is a short hand crimp lifeline adjuster designed for use with 3/16" stainless steel wire. A trusted component in sailboat lifeline systems, this compact adjuster allows you to fine-tune and maintain proper tension along your lifeline gate sections with ease.

Most commonly installed at the stern rail in conjunction with a single gate eye, this adjuster provides 1" of adjustment travel to take up slack and keep your lifeline taut and secure. The knurled adjustment knob offers tool-free tensioning, while the hex locking nut keeps the setting firmly in place once the correct tension is achieved.

Key Features:

 • Short profile design — ideal for stern rail gate applications
 • Knurled adjustment knob for easy hand tensioning
 • Hex locking nut secures adjustment in place
 • Hand crimp terminal construction — compatible with standard hand crimp tools
 • 1" range of adjustment travel
 • Stainless steel construction for corrosion resistance in marine environments

Specifications:

 • Wire Diameter: 3/16"
 • Pin Diameter: 1/4"
 • Adjustment Range: 1"
 • Terminal Type: Hand Crimp
 • Part Number: 27-406 (also known as 80980)

Important Note: Hand crimp terminals, when properly applied per manufacturer instructions, provide approximately 65–70% the breaking strength of 7×7 stainless steel wire. This is suitable for lifeline applications but these fittings should not be used for standing rigging or other high-load applications.
