Ancor Spade Terminals: Marine-Grade Reliability for Every Connection
When a wire connection fails on the water, the consequences go far beyond inconvenience. That's why serious boaters and marine technicians turn to Ancor Marine Grade® products — and in particular, their line of spade terminals engineered to outlast the punishing conditions of the marine environment. Saltwater, constant vibration, UV exposure, fuel vapors — Ancor spade terminals are designed to handle all of it without compromising the integrity of your electrical system.
What Sets Ancor Spade Terminals Apart
Ancor's Marine Grade terminals differ from automotive terminals by being designed specifically for the harsh marine environment. That distinction matters enormously. An automotive-grade spade terminal may look identical on the shelf, but it won't hold up to the moisture ingress and salt corrosion that marine wiring routinely faces.
At the core of Ancor's spade terminal lineup is their use of tinned copper. Tinned copper gives the least electrical resistance but the most corrosion protection — a critical balance in DC marine electrical systems where voltage drop and connection degradation can cascade into system-wide failures. Nylon insulators are easy to crimp and will not split, and the barrels are designed to tightly grip the wire with the least effort.
Two Distinct Product Lines
Ancor offers spade terminals in two primary configurations, each suited to different installation requirements:
- Nylon Insulated Flanged Spade Terminals — Marine Grade nylon terminals are designed for harsh boating applications; nylon insulators are ideal for crimping and will not split, making them ideal for non-waterproof applications. They feature a "double crimp" design that grips both the wire and the insulation for maximum strain relief. The flanged tip design is an important detail: the flanged tips make it less likely for terminals to slip off the stud accidentally under marginal connection conditions. These are available across a wide range of wire gauges, from fine 22-18 AWG up to heavier 12-10 AWG, and in popular screw sizes including #8 and #10, sold in convenient 25-pack and 100-pack quantities.
- Adhesive-Lined Heat Shrink Spade Terminals — For installations where moisture intrusion is a real concern, Ancor's heat shrink spade terminals provide a watertight solution. These connectors offer heat-activated adhesive built into the sleeve of the heat shrink tubing; when heated, they form a water-tight seal and provide ultimate vibration and strain relief, and are tinned for corrosion resistance. Constructed with cross-linked polyolefin tubing — much stronger than PVC and won't burn like PVC — the heat-activated adhesive lining provides an impervious seal to saltwater, oil, acids, and sunlight, as well as strain relief. These terminals achieve the highest shrink ratio, shrinking to 1/3 of their original size for a secure, professional finish.
Standards Compliance You Can Count On
As the first major supplier of UL listed products designed for the harsh marine environment, Ancor Marine Grade® products have earned a reputation for being the toughest and most reliable electrical components on the market. Ancor products are manufactured to precise specifications and designed to meet UL, ABYC, NMMA, and USCG standards — a compliance pedigree that gives professional installers and weekend boaters alike confidence that each connection will hold. The nylon insulated line carries the UL 486A listing and features double crimp with funnel entry for easier wire insertion during installation.
The Right Terminal for the Right Job
Choosing between nylon insulated and heat shrink spade terminals comes down to the installation environment. Nylon flanged terminals are well-suited for protected wire runs in dry compartments and panel connections, while heat shrink variants are the go-to choice for any connection exposed to spray, bilge moisture, or weather. Both series pair naturally with Ancor's broader catalog of tinned marine wire, ensuring your entire electrical circuit — from conductor to termination point — meets the same Marine Grade standard.
