The skeg is the fin-shaped component at the lowest point of an outboard motor's lower unit. It acts as a rudder to keep the boat tracking straight and assists in precise steering — and because of its exposed position, it is highly vulnerable to impact damage from rocks, sandbars, and submerged debris. A damaged skeg can degrade steering performance and accelerate wear on surrounding components. The Panther Safe-Skeg installs directly over the existing skeg, providing a protective shield that extends the life of the lower unit and helps maintain factory-smooth handling.
