Balmar Battery Monitors & Volt Meters: Precision Monitoring on the Water and Beyond
When it comes to knowing exactly how much power remains in your battery bank, guesswork can be costly — and potentially dangerous. Balmar has spent over 40 years engineering DC charging and monitoring solutions for sailors, power boaters, RV enthusiasts, and industrial users, and their battery monitors and volt meters represent some of the most sophisticated state-of-charge technology available today.
The SmartGauge™: A Shunt-Free Revolution
Balmar's original SmartGauge™ Battery Monitor redefined what boaters could expect from a battery monitor. Unlike conventional amp-hour counters that simply tally current flowing in and out, the SmartGauge™ uses a self-adjusting algorithm that continuously polls battery voltage and compares it against an internal battery model. As Balmar explains, this approach means the SmartGauge™ automatically adjusts to compensate for battery aging and the consequent reduced battery capacity over time — something a basic volt meter or amp-hour counter simply cannot do.
Installation is notably simple: the SmartGauge™ connects with just three 18 AWG wires, eliminating the need to crimp heavy battery cables for a shunt. It supports 12V and 24V operation automatically and is compatible with Standard Flooded, Deep Cycle Flooded, Sealed Maintenance Free, Gel Cell, and AGM battery types. A brightness-adjustable LED display and three membrane switches let users switch between primary and secondary battery banks with ease. High and low voltage alarms, plus state-of-charge alarms, provide an extra layer of protection against over-discharge.
The SG200: Next-Generation SmartLink™ Monitoring
Building on the SmartGauge™ legacy, Balmar's SG200 Battery Monitor is their second-generation flagship — and it combines the voltage-based intelligence of the SmartGauge™ with the real-time precision of a shunt-based amp-hour counting system. The result is a monitor that tracks every critical parameter a serious boater or RVer needs: State of Charge (SoC%), State of Health (SoH%), charge and discharge current flow, voltage, time remaining, and fault history.
One standout feature is the SG200's State of Health (SoH%) metric — a measurement that Balmar describes as exclusive to the SG200 — which tracks how a battery's overall capacity has degraded over its lifetime. The SG200 is self-learning and self-calibrating, typically reaching 97% accuracy within just two charge/discharge cycles, and it does not lose accuracy as it ages. The system communicates over Balmar's proprietary SmartLink™ network, which supports multiple displays and multiple SmartShunts simultaneously — ideal for vessels or vehicles with more than one battery bank. The color display fits any standard 2 1/16" gauge socket, and optional Bluetooth® connectivity via the SG2-0300 Bluetooth® Gateway enables real-time monitoring from a smartphone or tablet through free iOS and Android apps. The SmartShunt is rated IP67 for durability in harsh marine environments.
The SG200 supports all common battery chemistries, including Lead Acid, AGM, Gel, and LiFePO4 — making it equally at home on a cruising sailboat, a powerboat, or a lithium-equipped RV.
Why Choose Balmar for Battery Monitoring?
- Self-calibrating accuracy: Both the SmartGauge™ and SG200 adapt to your specific batteries over time, unlike static amp-hour counters.
- Scalable architecture: The SG200's SmartLink™ network allows multiple displays and battery banks to be monitored from a single system.
- Broad chemistry support: Coverage for flooded, AGM, Gel, and LiFePO4 batteries means one platform fits most installations.
- Proven reliability: Independent testing by Enersys® confirmed SmartGauge™ accuracy within 3% after six months of continuous use.
- Easy integration: Shunt-free SmartGauge™ wiring and the SG200's standard gauge-socket display make installation accessible for DIY boaters.
