The J-B Weld Company was founded in 1969 by Sam and Mary Bonham. Sam had identified a real-world need for a "cold weld" solution in his truck service garage — a way to make permanent, structural repairs without the heat and equipment of traditional torch welding. Working alongside a Texas A&M chemist, he developed a steel-reinforced two-part epoxy formula that he branded J-B Weld. The Bonhams went from selling the product out of their car to auto parts stores across Texas, eventually reaching retailers throughout the United States and around the world.

A Formula Built on Real-World Demands

What made J-B Weld stand out from the start was its roots in the shop floor. Early adopters were mechanics and farmers — exactly the kind of demanding users who would quickly abandon anything that underperformed. The original formula earned its reputation through brutal, practical testing: repairs were made, then subjected to hammers, vises, and sheer force. The science behind it — suspending steel particles within the epoxy resin to create a structural composite — gave the cured product properties closer to a metal patch than ordinary adhesive.

The original J-B Weld epoxy is water-resistant, petroleum-resistant, chemical-resistant, and able to withstand temperatures up to 500°F continuously. Once cured, it can be drilled, tapped, ground, machined, sanded, and painted — making it a genuine repair material rather than just a bonding agent.
