Sika Primers
Why Sika Primers Are the Professional's First Step
Before any adhesive or sealant can perform at its best, the substrate underneath must be properly prepared. That's the precise role of Sika's line of primers — purpose-engineered adhesion promoters that form a critical chemical bridge between a surface and the polyurethane adhesive or sealant applied on top of it. Sika has spent decades refining this science, and the result is a portfolio of moisture-reactive primers trusted by automotive technicians, marine professionals, and serious DIYers alike.
How Sika Primers Work
What sets Sika primers apart is their moisture-reactive chemistry. Sika primers are solvent-based adhesion promoters that react with moisture and form a thin layer, which acts as a link between substrates and adhesives. This isn't a simple surface coating — it's an active chemical reaction that creates a durable molecular bond, dramatically improving the long-term performance of whatever sealant or adhesive system follows.
Sika offers a wide range of pre-treatment solutions including primers, activators, and cleaners to improve adhesion on a variety of substrates. Their primer lineup is carefully tiered so that professionals can match the right product to the right application level and substrate type.
Key Product Lines
Sika® Primer-206 G+P is one of the most widely used products in the lineup. It is a black, moisture-curing liquid primer specifically formulated for the treatment of bond faces in direct glazing work prior to application of Sika® polyurethane direct glazing adhesives. It enhances adhesion on automotive and marine glass, metal, and other non-porous surfaces — making it ideal for windshield and window bonding applications — and this durable, weather-resistant primer improves long-term sealant performance in harsh environments.
Sika® Primer-209 D takes a different approach, targeting flexible and composite materials. Sika® Primer-209 D is used to improve adhesion on many plastics and paints such as GRP, epoxy resins, PVC, ABS, PMMA, PC, PS and acrylics, alkyds/melamine, powder coatings, and baking varnishes. This primer may even provide excellent adhesion without a previous activation step on certain plastic substrates.
For marine environments specifically, Sika® MultiPrimer Marine is formulated to handle the unique demands of boat construction and repair. Sika® MultiPrimer Marine is used to improve adhesion on many metals such as aluminum, steel, galvanized steel and non-ferrous metal, on wood such as teak, mahogany, Oregon pine and cork.
A System Designed to Work Together
One of Sika's greatest strengths in the primers category is its ecosystem approach. Sika formulates primers specifically to promote adhesion of Sikaflex® urethane sealants to porous substrates — meaning these primers aren't generic off-the-shelf products, but rather engineered components within a complete bonding system. When a Sika primer is paired with a Sika adhesive or sealant, you get a tested, validated combination designed to perform as a unified system.
Sika also continues to push forward on environmental responsibility. As demand for eco-friendly solutions grew, VOC reduction became an important target, and Sika has worked to address this — introducing water-based activator technology for glass bonding that nearly eliminated the need for VOCs in certain applications.
Choosing the Right Sika Primer
With multiple formulas available, selecting the right Sika primer comes down to understanding your substrate and sealant system:
- Glass and painted surfaces (automotive/marine): Sika® Primer-206 G+P is the go-to choice
- Plastics, GRP, composites: Sika® Primer-209 D offers targeted adhesion without always requiring a pre-activation step
- Multi-substrate marine projects: Sika® MultiPrimer Marine handles metals, wood, and more in a single product
