How It Works: The PSS creates a mechanical face seal between a rotating stainless steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange attaches to the stern tube with hose clamps and is bored larger than the shaft diameter, allowing it to float and compensate for misalignment and vibration. Two recessed o-rings in the stainless steel collar seal against the shaft and rotate with it, eliminating wear during operation.

Maintenance: As preventative maintenance, PYI recommends inspecting the bellows regularly and replacing every six years. The bellows should be inspected more frequently in environments with non-sealed batteries emitting sulfuric acid vapor or where ozonators are present, as these accelerate rubber deterioration. Maintenance kits are available containing bellows, o-rings, set screws, hose clamps, and allen key.
