Antenna Extensions
What Are Antenna Extensions and Why Do They Matter?
On the water, your VHF radio is only as good as the antenna it's connected to — and that antenna is only as effective as its position on your boat. Antenna extensions are the marine hardware solution that raises your antenna higher above the waterline and clears it above on-board obstructions, directly translating to better communication range.
VHF radio signals travel on a line-of-sight principle: the higher the antenna, the farther it can "see" over the horizon. An antenna just a couple of meters above the water's surface has a communicating horizon of only a few miles, while raising it significantly can double that range. Antenna extensions accomplish this without requiring you to relocate your entire mounting system or run new cable — they simply thread between your existing antenna mount and the antenna itself.
Types of Marine Antenna Extensions
Marine antenna extensions come in two broad varieties:
- Rigid extension masts – Physical tubes or masts, typically made of stainless steel or fiberglass, that thread onto a standard 1"–14 mount fitting and lift the antenna skyward. These are ideal when you need to clear a radar arch, T-top, or other superstructure.
- Coaxial cable extension assemblies – Lengths of marine-grade coaxial cable with properly terminated connectors (typically PL-259 or FME) that extend the run from antenna to radio. Quality cable and tight, weatherproof connections are essential here — signal loss increases with cable length, so low-loss coax matters.
What to Look for When Shopping Antenna Extensions
Material quality tops the list when shopping this category. In a saltwater environment, corrosion resistance is non-negotiable. Look for 304 or 316 stainless steel on rigid mast extensions and marine-rated coax with UV-resistant jacketing for cable extensions. Standard threading (1"–14 thread) is nearly universal on marine antennas, but always confirm compatibility with your existing mount and antenna before purchasing.
For cable extensions, maintain signal integrity by using high-quality cable — standard RG-58 or better, with double-shield construction where possible — and ensure all connector fittings are properly sealed against moisture.
Top Brands in Marine Antenna Extensions
Sea-Dog Line is one of the marine industry's most recognized names in deck hardware and antenna accessories. A third-generation family company with roots going back to 1933, Sea-Dog brings that heritage to its antenna extension lineup. Their rigid extension masts are machined from corrosion-resistant 304 stainless steel with standard 1"–14 male and female threads, allowing custom antenna placement heights and full-length internal routing for coaxial connectors.
Shakespeare Antennas is a globally recognized leader in marine antenna technology, with over a century of innovation behind the brand. Their extension mast lineup — including the Galaxy® 5228 Series — is constructed of high-quality fiberglass finished to match Shakespeare's own antenna families, giving boaters a clean, integrated look while boosting height and clearing on-board obstructions. Shakespeare also offers stainless steel ferrule-style extensions compatible with all standard marine antenna threads.
