Digital Yacht BM100: Smarter Marine Battery Monitoring
Knowing the true state of your boat's electrical system is one of the most critical — and most overlooked — aspects of seamanship. Guessing at battery reserves while underway is a recipe for a dead engine start battery, failed electronics, or worse. Digital Yacht, a UK-based marine electronics innovator with offices in the US and France, has addressed this challenge head-on with its flagship BM100 Battery Monitoring System — a purpose-built solution that brings professional-grade power management to vessels of every size.
What Makes the BM100 Different
At the heart of the battery monitoring system is Digital Yacht's integration philosophy: rather than adding another standalone display to your helm, the BM100 leverages the NMEA 2000 network your boat likely already has. The product is designed to monitor the voltage and current of the boat's battery bank and communicate this data on an NMEA 2000 network. That means your existing multi-function display from Garmin, Raymarine, Furuno, or Navico can suddenly become a full-featured battery management screen — no additional chartplotter required.
The technical core of the BM100 is its SmartShunt. Featuring a 500A SmartShunt and NMEA 2000 connectivity, it accurately tracks voltage, current, state of charge, and time to depletion. Beyond real-time readings, it intelligently calculates the battery's state of charge and the time to depletion for the remaining charge, and also keeps track of historical data, such as deepest discharge and average discharge current as well as the number of charge and discharge cycles.
One of the standout practical features is dual-battery support. The SmartShunt can also monitor the voltage of a 2nd battery — typically dedicated to engine starting. This is invaluable for sailors and powerboaters who run separate house and start battery banks.
Network Integration and Wireless Monitoring
Bluetooth support lets you monitor detailed battery data on your phone or tablet, helping extend battery life and manage onboard power with confidence. This hybrid approach — combining NMEA 2000 for the helm and Bluetooth for mobile devices — reflects Digital Yacht's broader design ethos. Digital Yacht's products have always been open-source and certified by the National Marine Electronics Association, which lets them play nicely with third-party apps, software, and hardware.
Suitable for 12V, 24V, and 48V systems, the standard SmartShunt is rated at 500A with 1000A and 2000A versions available for larger systems. Multiple BM100s can be installed for each battery bank if required and can be field-programmed to display individually on the NMEA 2000 device.
Part of a Larger Ecosystem
The BM100 is a complete system comprising the SmartShunt and the veKonvert NMEA 2000 interface, and is part of Digital Yacht's iSeaSense range of NMEA 2000 boat instruments. The BM100 is part of a wider group of products introduced by Digital Yacht that bring NMEA 2000 connectivity to Victron systems using the veKonvert interface — meaning all Victron solar panel controllers (MPPTs) and battery monitors can also interconnect to NMEA 2000. This makes the BM100 an especially compelling choice for boaters already invested in Victron energy hardware who want to surface that data on their chart plotter.
Digital Yacht's design team has hundreds of years of combined experience in marine electronic systems, with manufacturing in the UK and global reach with offices in the US and France. That depth of expertise shows in the BM100's thoughtful integration of hardware precision and network connectivity — giving mariners the confidence of knowing exactly how much power they have, and how long it will last.
