What Are Coax Connectors and Why Do They Matter?
Coaxial connectors are the critical link between your antenna, coaxial cable, and radio — and they deserve far more attention than they typically receive. As anyone who has wrestled with a weak VHF signal on the water knows, even the best antenna system is only as strong as its weakest connection. Even the best antenna cannot compensate for signal loss caused by poor cable selection, improper installation, corrosion, or low-quality connectors. How Coax Connectors Work
The coaxial cable is the transmission line that carries radio frequency (RF) energy from your VHF radio to the antenna and returns received signals back to the radio. Connectors terminate each end of that cable and must form a clean, low-resistance interface to avoid degrading signal quality.
Most marine and amateur radio gear uses the so-called "UHF" connector, formally called the PL-259 for the male side and SO-239 for the female side. Typically, the SO-239 (UHF Female) is installed on the radio, and the PL-259 (UHF Male) is installed on the cable. These RF coaxial connectors feature a threaded coupling, which prevents them from being removed accidentally and enables them to be tightened sufficiently to make a good, low-resistance connection.
The quality, length, condition, and installation of your coax cable directly affect communication range, signal clarity, DSC distress transmission reliability, AIS performance, and overall marine radio effectiveness. - Installation method: Connectors come in solder-on, crimp, and compression/solderless styles — each with tradeoffs in ease of use and long-term reliability.
