Hubbell 100A Products
Hubbell in the 100A Class
At 100 amps, a power connection is no longer a casual plug-and-play matter. These devices carry serious current to generators, shore power systems, industrial machinery, and temporary power distribution, so the quality of the contacts, the housing, and the sealing all matter. Hubbell, through its Wiring Device-Kellems line, has long been associated with this heavy end of the connector market, and its 100A pin and sleeve devices are a good example of why electricians and facility managers specify the brand.
Pin and Sleeve Construction
Pin and sleeve connectors differ from standard blade or twist-lock designs. The contacts are enclosed in a shrouded, keyed body, so energized parts are protected during mating and unmating. Hubbell's 100A offering spans plugs, connectors, receptacles, and inlets in a range of configurations, including 2-pole 3-wire, 3-pole 4-wire, and 4-pole 5-wire arrangements. Voltage ratings run from 125V and 250V up to 480V and 600V, covering single-phase and three-phase applications.
IEC and Insulgrip Families
Two families stand out in the 100A range:
- IEC pin and sleeve devices: Built to IEC 60309 standards, these use color-coded housings so the voltage and configuration can be identified at a glance. A typical 100A watertight connector pairs a non-metallic, abuse-resistant housing with a self-closing gasketed cover and an IP68/IP69K and NEMA 4X rating. Some IEC configurations are certified to both North American and international amperage ratings, so a single device can serve a 100A or 125A circuit.
- Insulgrip devices: These are designed to be interchangeable with traditional all-metallic pin and sleeve devices built to UL 1686 Class 1. They combine a metallic shroud, which protects the pins and provides grounding, with a watertight non-metallic housing for corrosion resistance and electrical safety. Style 1 devices ground through the shroud, while Style 2 devices add a dedicated ground pin for dual-ground protection.
Hubbell also offers mechanically interlocked and switch-rated options in the IEC range. These prevent a plug from being inserted or removed while the circuit is live, an important safeguard on high-ampacity loads.
What to Check When Choosing
- Voltage and phase: Match the plug, connector, and receptacle to the circuit. The color coding and keying are designed to prevent mismatches.
- Conductor size: Many 100A devices accept conductors in roughly the 3 AWG to 1/0 AWG range, so confirm the terminal capacity against your cable.
- Environment: Wet, dusty, or washdown areas call for watertight, corrosion-resistant housings with a suitable NEMA or IP rating.
- Mating components: Plugs, connectors, inlets, and back boxes need to belong to the same family and configuration to mate properly.
