AFI 50A Products
AFI 50A Products for Marine Shore Power
Boats with air conditioning, galley appliances, water heaters and battery chargers often rely on a 50-amp, 125/250V shore power system. AFI's 50A products are built for that kind of load, helping connect a vessel to dockside power reliably and with fewer headaches. AFI shore power gear is closely tied to the Marinco family of marine electrical products, and AFI-branded parts are commonly cross-referenced with Marinco, Guest, Nicro and BEP equivalents. That shared lineage means familiar design features and broad compatibility with the plugs, inlets and cordsets found on docks and boats everywhere.
Adapters That Solve Real Dock Problems
Two kinds of 50A adapters stand out in this category:
- Reverse Y adapters. The AFI RY504-2-30 is a reverse "Y" adapter that lets a 50-amp boat draw power from two separate 30-amp 125V dock receptacles. It is useful at older marinas that do not offer 50A pedestals. It features dual locking 30A male plugs on the dock side, a single 50A 125/250V female connector on the boat side, and a sealing collar system that helps keep moisture out of the connection.
- Pigtail adapters. The AFI 150SPP pigtail adapter pairs a 15A connection with a 50A 125/250V connection, giving boaters a compact way to bridge mismatched plug configurations.
Because these adapters do not themselves substitute for proper overcurrent protection, it is wise to understand your total onboard load before connecting a 50A system to two 30A circuits. Adapting down does not increase the capacity of the dock outlets.
Marine-Grade Construction Matters
Shore power connections live in a punishing environment of salt spray, UV exposure, humidity and constant plugging and unplugging. Products in the broader Marinco/AFI 50A family emphasize watertight molded plugs and connectors, UV-stabilized marine-grade materials, and the Easy Lock threaded-ring system that keeps plugs from backing out. The reverse Y adapter highlights corrosion- and UV-resistant heavy-duty construction, which is exactly what you want from a part that sits on a wet dock.
What to Check Before You Buy
- Amperage and voltage: Confirm your boat's inlet is 50A 125/250V (SS2-50) rather than 50A 125V only.
- Dock-side outlet type: Match the adapter's dock-side plug to the pedestal receptacle you expect to use, whether 30A twist-lock or 15A household style.
- Connector orientation: Note which end is male and which is female so the adapter fits between your cord and the pedestal.
- Environment: Saltwater boaters should prioritize sealing collars, corrosion-resistant contacts and UV-stable housings.
