What Are Marine Swivels and Why Do You Need One?

Swivels are one of the most underappreciated components in a boat's ground tackle system — yet they play a critical role every time you drop the hook. A swivel is a rotating marine fitting placed between loaded components, such as an anchor and chain, that allows controlled rotation so the connected parts can align without twisting the chain, rope, or cable. Without one, the natural movement of a boat at anchor — swinging with wind, tide, and current — puts constant rotational stress on your rode.

An anchor swivel prevents twisting of your rode while the anchor is set and also prevents your rode from snagging — and since your rode can often be even more expensive than your anchor, a swivel is a genuinely valuable investment. Beyond protecting the rode, an anchor swivel allows for free rotation of the anchor, preventing the chain from twisting as the boat changes direction, and also allows the anchor to ride over the bow roller more smoothly.

Swivels are generally considered the weakest link between your anchor and the boat — they can be side-loaded when the anchor is stuck in rocks and may fail at much lower loads than their rated SWL. For this reason, it is generally recommended to use a short piece of chain attached to the anchor via a shackle and then attach the swivel bridging chain to chain. Also keep in mind that poor-quality or incorrectly fitted swivels can become a weak point, bind under side load, or fail at the pin, so inspection, correct orientation, and secure shackles are essential.

Maintenance is straightforward but important: rinse with fresh water after each use, check for rust, and make sure the pins turn freely — lubricate as needed and replace any hardware showing cracks or deformation.
