The PSS Shaft Seal (Packless Sealing System) is a dripless marine propeller shaft seal. It replaces a traditional stuffing box, packing gland or flax packing box on sailboats and powerboats. It is a mechanical face seal that keeps lake or seawater from entering the hull where the propeller shaft passes through the stern tube. The result is a dry bilge, without the constant dripping and adjustment that packing requires.

Key Features:

• Mechanical face seal design: A rotating stainless-steel rotor seals against a stationary carbon-graphite flange.
• Self-aligning carbon flange: The flange floats around the shaft, so it compensates for most misalignment and vibration.
• Flexible nitrile bellows: The molded bellows keeps the seal faces in constant contact. This allows for fore-and-aft shaft movement from propeller thrust.
• Low maintenance: No packing to replace or adjust, and no needless bilge pumping. Periodic inspection of the bellows is recommended.
• Less shaft wear: It helps eliminate shaft wear and minimizes corrosion.
• Retrofit or new build: It can replace a leaking packing gland on an existing boat. It is also used as standard equipment by many boat builders.
• Hose barb fitting: The carbon flange has a hose barb for venting or water injection, depending on the installation.

Typical operating limits for the Type A seal are a temperature range of 5°F to 225°F and pressure up to 15 PSI. Maximum shaft speed is 10,000 RPM. High-speed vessels need a plumbed water supply to lubricate and cool the seal faces.
