What started as a mail-order business serving scuba divers quickly evolved into something far larger when, in 1978, a waterproof flashlight Dave had hand-built caught the attention of the U.S. Navy, launching Pelican into the professional and military markets almost overnight.

In Europe, products are sold under the Peli brand name.
