Centek Marine: Six Decades of Exhaust Engineering Excellence

Centek Marine has been one of the most trusted names in marine exhaust engineering since its founding in 1962. Originally pioneered under the Vernay Plastics name, the company went on to develop the designs that boat builders and marine professionals around the world rely on today. With an in-house engineering team boasting a combined 150+ years of experience and a portfolio of more than 14 marine patents, Centek brings a depth of knowledge to every product that few manufacturers can match.

At the heart of Centek's legacy is the Vernatone® — the first fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) water-cooled marine muffler ever produced. This landmark innovation set the standard for how wet exhaust systems manage heat, noise, and backpressure aboard vessels of all sizes. Today, the company's exhaust and ventilation products can be found aboard more than 20,000 commercial and recreational vessels operating in nearly 100 countries, from weekend runabouts to military craft to superyachts.

What Makes Centek Products Stand Apart

A critical challenge of any marine exhaust installation is managing high-temperature gases in a tight, corrosive environment without sacrificing engine performance or passenger comfort. Centek addresses this with its proprietary Vernatube™ fire-retardant fiberglass tubing, which forms the backbone of many of their exhaust muffler and fitting assemblies. Vernatube exceeds standards designated for self-extinguishing materials per ASTM D-635 and UL94V-0, as well as US Navy and USCG specifications — a level of performance rarely found outside of military-grade applications.

Unlike metal exhaust components that corrode when exposed to saltwater and exhaust gases, Centek's FRP products resist corrosion, won't warp, and won't melt. This durability is why the company backs its standard fiberglass exhaust products — including Vernalift® and Vernatube — with a five-year warranty from the date of original sale.

A Complete Marine Exhaust Ecosystem

Centek's product range spans virtually every component of a marine wet exhaust system. Their lineup of marine mufflers includes the iconic Vernatone® series for noise-sensitive yacht applications, the Vernalift® lift muffler purpose-built for installations that require exhaust gases to be raised above the waterline, and the compact Minimax for tight engine room configurations. The Vernalift® line offers sound attenuation of 22–28 dB and holds Lloyd's Register Type Approval.

Routing a wet exhaust system requires precise, high-quality connectors, and Centek's exhaust elbows are engineered to the same exacting standards as their tubing. Available in 45° and 90° angles — as well as reducer configurations useful in repowers and refits — these elbows feature smooth inner walls to minimize flow restriction and have earned Lloyd's Register Type Approval. Rounding out the installation hardware, Centek's transom exhaust fittings, including thru-hull assemblies made from compression-molded fiberglass, eliminate the corrosion concerns associated with bronze or stainless steel alternatives. All transom fittings carry Lloyd's Register Type Approval as well.

For vessels where gas and water separation is a priority — especially mid-range generators or propulsion engines installed amidships — Centek offers dedicated fuel/air separators such as the Gen-Sep™ and Combo-Sep® systems. These provide efficient gas-to-water separation while maintaining the noise-reduction benefits of the Vernalift® muffler family.

Certifications and Custom Engineering

Centek Marine products are certified to ISO 9001:2015 and hold Lloyd's Register Type Approval and ABYC P-1 compliance. On average, the engineering team designs one new custom part per day — translating to approximately 200 new custom parts per year and more than 30,000 custom designs since 1962. For naval architects, builders, and refit professionals, this capacity for bespoke solutions makes Centek an indispensable partner in any serious marine build.
