Andersen Electric Winches: Power-Assisted Sailing from a Danish Pioneer
Andersen has spent more than seven decades refining the art of the sailing winch, and nowhere is that engineering heritage more apparent than in their lineup of electric winches and parts. Designed and manufactured in Denmark, Andersen has earned a reputation for building high-quality, reliable sailing winches that can last a lifetime. The brand's electric range carries that same DNA forward, offering power-assisted sail handling without sacrificing the precision and durability Andersen is known for.
Two Distinct Electric Winch Platforms
Andersen's electric lineup is built around two primary technologies, each suited to different installation scenarios and performance needs.
- E1 Electric Winches — E1 electric winches allow the user to hoist and trim sails at the push of a button, featuring an integrated motor unit with a series-wound motor that provides two operational speeds: high speed for low loads and slow, high-torque operation for heavy loads. The winches also incorporate advanced safety features, including overload protection that temporarily disables the winch if the load exceeds the limit, thermal cutout protection, and reverse polarity protection.
- Compact Motor™ Electric Winches — The Compact Motor™ electric winches feature a brushless DC motor combined with a low-profile planetary gearbox, making them ideal for installations where space is limited. Available in above-deck or below-deck configurations, these winches provide variable speed control based on the pressure applied to the push-button, allowing for precise trimming and hoisting. The Andersen Compact Motor™ is carefully matched to a low-profile planetary gearbox which requires less space for installation, and draws considerably less current than traditional motor/gearbox configurations.
Smart Features for On-Water Confidence
Compact Motor™ winches are supplied with a push button with integrated LED which illuminates when power to the winch system is on. The push button incorporates a hinged safety cover to prevent inadvertent winch operation and is water resistant rated to IP67. The push button also acts with the controller to flash status codes that assist with troubleshooting in the event of overload or other system protection intervention.
The motor uses non-carbon brush technology to minimize wear, and features the Power Rib™, which places vertical ribs running up the surface of the drum to ensure maximum grip and minimum wear on ropes, reducing the replacement costs of sheets and halyards.
Easy Installation and Flexible Voltage Options
Andersen electric winches can be installed in the same position as your current winches by removing the old winches, drilling matching holes for the winch and motor drive, and making the electrical connections. The Compact Motor™ electric winch is available in two formats for either Above Deck or Below Deck motor placement, with the motor gearbox and controller integrated into one compact unit with no extra control box necessary. Both 12V and 24V versions are available across the range, giving sailors flexibility to match their onboard electrical systems.
Electric Conversion Kits: Upgrade What You Have
For sailors who already own an Andersen manual winch, the brand offers a practical path to electric power without replacing the entire unit. Converting your winch from manual to electric motor-driven operation is easy using Andersen's Electric Conversion Kits. Available in either E1 single speed, Electric Two Speed, or Compact Motor™ Variable Speed power units, these conversion kits can be fitted to most modern Andersen Winches™ ranging from size 28ST to 110ST and are available in 12V or 24V. This is a popular solution for sailors who are increasingly turning to electrical systems onboard to improve comfort and adapting their sailing as they get older or sailing with fewer or lighter crew.
Whether you're outfitting a new build, upgrading a cruising yacht, or simply converting a trusted manual winch to electric power, Andersen's electric winch platform delivers the performance, safety, and longevity the brand has stood for across generations of sailors.
