What Are Boat Fender Lines?
Fender lines are the unsung heroes of every successful docking maneuver. Fender lines are used to attach boat fenders to cleats, rails, or lifelines, holding the fenders in place so they can protect the boat's hull from damage while docking or mooring. Without a properly rigged fender line, even the best fender in the world can slip out of position at exactly the wrong moment — leaving your hull exposed to docks, pilings, and neighboring vessels.
Why Fender Lines Matter
Boat fenders serve as cushions between your vessel and the dock or other boats, absorbing impacts and preventing costly damage to your hull, paint, and gel coat. But fenders are only as effective as the lines securing them. A fender line that is too short, too thin, or improperly attached can allow a fender to ride up onto the dock rather than staying between the hull and the dock surface — defeating its purpose entirely.
Most fender lines are made from marine-grade nylon or braided rope that resists abrasion and performs well in wet marine environments. Many feature a spliced loop on one end, making them easy to attach to fenders or cleats without tying complex knots. The right line diameter matters too: using a line that is too small relative to the fender's ropehole can concentrate stress on a single point, potentially causing the ropehole to crack or tear over time.
Choosing the Right Fender Line
When selecting fender lines, consider these key factors:
- Length: Lines should be long enough to position fenders at the correct height — close to the water's surface where the hull meets the dock. Lines that are too short force fenders to hang too high, risking them swinging up onto the dock.
- Diameter: Match the line diameter to your fender's ropehole. A general guideline is to use no less than 3/8" diameter for standard fenders and up to 1" for larger fenders on bigger vessels.
- Material: Double-braided nylon is a popular choice for its combination of strength, flexibility, UV resistance, and resistance to rot, mildew, and oil.
- Pre-spliced ends: Lines with a factory-spliced eye on one end make rigging faster and create a stronger, more reliable connection than a hand-tied knot.
- Sold in pairs: Many fender lines come in pairs, making it easy to outfit your port and starboard sides together.
