What Is a Primer Bulb and Why Does It Matter?

A primer bulb is a small but mighty component that plays a critical role in any carbureted small engine or marine fuel system. Without it, many engines simply won't start. Unlike automotive engines, which typically use an electric fuel pump to deliver pressurized fuel, most outboard motors and small engine equipment rely on a diaphragm-style fuel pump that only operates efficiently once the engine is already running. That creates a classic catch-22 — the engine needs fuel to start, but the pump needs the engine to run. The primer bulb solves this problem entirely.

Installed in the fuel line between the tank and the engine, the primer bulb works as a simple manual pump. Primer bulbs feature a flexible rubber or elastomer body with one-way check valves on each end. When you squeeze the bulb, the inlet valve closes and the outlet valve opens, pushing fuel toward the engine. Release it, and the process reverses — drawing more fuel in from the tank. Repeat until the bulb firms up, and your fuel line is charged and ready for ignition.

• Feels stiff, brittle, or cracked
• Won't firm up when repeatedly squeezed
• Collapses and stays flat after the engine starts
• Shows visible fuel leaks around the fittings
