ComNav Autopilots Built for Real Sea Conditions
ComNav is a Canadian marine electronics manufacturer based in Richmond, British Columbia. Founded in 1982, it started in the marine industry with GNSS compasses and autopilots. Within the Radars & Autopilots category, the brand's strength is steering: it is one of the better-known autopilot specialists serving everything from sport fishing boats to commercial ships.
Intelligent Steering Technology
The core of ComNav's autopilot lineup is its adaptive steering software. The models incorporate intelligent adaptive steering technology (IST), meet CE requirements up to IMO compliance, and use industry-standard NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 interfaces with IP67 waterproof integrity. The adaptive system fine-tunes steering parameters for speed, trim, drift, currents, roll, pitch, weather and wind effects. In practice, this means less constant correction at the helm and a steadier course when conditions change.
Product Lines to Know
- P Series (P4, P3, P2): The P4 was created for mid-size and large yachts, with intelligent steering technology, automatic leeway compensation, and an auto-setup function that supports compass detection and calibration. The Admiral P3 is IMO/Wheelmark compliant for demanding high-seas commercial applications.
- Autopilot 1001: Positioned as a fixed-station autopilot for mid-sized vessels in the 30 to 60 foot range, with Continuous, Emergency and U-turn functions.
- Autopilot 2001: BC Ferries specified the ComNav 2001 for its Century class vessels. It is aimed at larger ships.
- Autopilot 1420 and drive components: The 1420 pairs with cable drive or hydraulic pump options, and the wider system also includes remote controllers, distribution boxes and interface modules.
Choosing the Right ComNav System
Match the autopilot to your vessel size, steering type (cable, hydraulic or other) and the heading sensor you want to feed it. A complete system typically combines a control head, a course computer, a compass or rate sensor, and a drive unit or pump. ComNav's network interfaces also make it easier to integrate with existing instruments and chartplotters. Remember that ComNav's focus is autopilot steering and heading technology, so if you need a dedicated radar scanner, check the full category for other options.
Why Boaters Trust the Brand
Each product comes with an extended 3-year warranty, and technical service is available in over 130 countries. Products are manufactured to ISO 9001 quality management systems. That level of support matters for equipment that works continuously offshore.
