Simrad Sounder Modules
A sounder module is a dedicated sonar processor that connects to a compatible multifunction display over Ethernet. It adds sonar performance beyond what a display's built-in echosounder can provide. Simrad's sounder modules are built for anglers and captains who want more channels, more depth capability, or higher-resolution imaging, without replacing the display already at the helm. This page covers how Simrad approaches that job and what to consider when choosing a module.
The S5100 Sounder with CHIRP
The S5100 is the heavyweight of the lineup. Simrad describes it as its first sounder module to feature three fully independent sonar channels, delivering true simultaneous coverage of up to three different depth ranges. In practice, you can connect three single-channel transducers, or pair one dual-channel and one single-channel, then tailor coverage to the water you fish and the species you chase.
Because the channels are independent, different frequency ranges can be viewed simultaneously in a split-screen layout on a single display. That suits offshore work, where you may want a deep channel for structure and a shallower one for bait balls or pelagic fish, all while keeping bottom tracking intact.
The S5100 relies on CHIRP processing. CHIRP uses frequency-swept pulses to provide improved target resolution and noise rejection compared to traditional single-frequency sonar. The module also supports wide-angle transducers, which deliver enhanced coverage of the upper water column and are a good fit for targeting pelagic species.
The S3100 Active Imaging HD Module
Not every installation needs three channels. The compact S3100 is aimed at a different goal: it brings Active Imaging HD to NSS and NSO evo3S displays for enhanced clarity and additional underwater views. If you already run an evo3S display and want to pair it with an Active Imaging HD 3-in-1 transducer, an S3100-series module is the path to get there.
Choosing the Right Module
- Display compatibility: The S5100 requires one or more compatible transducers and a compatible Ethernet-connected Simrad multifunction display or fish finder. It is not compatible with GO or Cruise displays.
- Transducer connectors: Up to three 9-pin transducers can connect directly to the S5100's sonar channels, while blue 7-pin transducers need the 7-to-9-pin adapter cable.
- Fishing style: Offshore and deep-water anglers benefit most from multi-channel coverage. Anglers who mainly want imaging detail on an evo3S display may prefer the Active Imaging HD route.
- Installation: High-speed Ethernet connectivity enables easy installation almost anywhere on board, so the module can sit near the transducers instead of behind the display.
- Power handling: Check your electrical system. The S5100 is listed with typical power consumption of 23 W and a maximum of 85 W.
One practical installation note from the S5100 manual: removing transducer cables while the module is powered on can cause sparks that damage the transmitter and the transducers. Always disconnect power first.
