Epifanes Wood Varnishes
Epifanes Wood Varnishes: A Century of Finishing Excellence
Epifanes has earned a reputation as one of the most trusted names in wood finishing, and nowhere is that more apparent than in their line of wood varnishes. Founded in the Netherlands in 1902, the brand has spent well over a century refining formulas that protect and beautify wood in some of the most demanding environments imaginable — the open sea. That same marine-grade engineering makes Epifanes wood varnishes equally exceptional for household and fine woodworking applications.
What Sets Epifanes Wood Varnishes Apart
The foundation of Epifanes' wood varnish technology lies in its carefully balanced chemistry. Epifanes varnishes are formulated with a blend of tung oil, alkyd resins, and UV-filtering compounds. This combination not only enhances the natural beauty of wood but also provides robust protection against demanding marine elements, including ultraviolet rays, moisture, and rain. The result is a finish that works as hard as it looks good.
Epifanes offers a variety of one- and two-component varnishes and finishes in high-gloss, satin, and matte finishes for all wood types. This range allows woodworkers, boat owners, and finishing professionals to choose the system that best matches their substrate, skill level, and working conditions.
Key Product Lines
Epifanes Clear Varnish is the brand's flagship offering. Known around the world, it is considered the ultimate in high-gloss finish — a traditional marine varnish based on tung oil, phenolic-modified alkyd resins, and maximum UV absorbers. It delivers superior flow, gloss, and durability, with excellent flexibility and water resistance in all climatic conditions, high build capability, and renowned gloss retention and weather durability.
Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss is an innovative one-component varnish alternative for those who work with oily, resinous hardwoods. Based on phenolic-modified alkyd resins and tung oil with microscopic porosity properties, it is specifically formulated for oily woods like teak and iroko. Woodfinish Gloss is a high-build coating that offers a hard varnish-like finish without sanding between coats. Simply recoat within 72 hours and no sanding is required — a significant time-saver for multi-coat systems.
Epifanes Wood Finish Matte rounds out the Woodfinish family. Its finish is a rich matte with a clear amber color and has the appearance of being hand-rubbed, offering superior flow and durability along with excellent scratch resistance and exterior weather resistance. Specifically formulated for oily woods like teak and iroko, Wood Finish Matte looks its best when applied over multiple coats of Wood Finish Gloss, Epifanes Clear Gloss Varnish, or Epifanes Polyurethane Clear Gloss.
One-Part vs. Two-Part Systems
Choosing the right Epifanes varnish system comes down to your substrate and conditions. One-component varnish provides ease of application, is more tolerant of the existing system, and can be applied with good results in a wider range of temperatures — while also providing the necessary elasticity and flexibility so it will not crack because of movements in the wood. A two-component varnish is harder and more durable, but is more demanding regarding application skills and working conditions such as temperature and relative air humidity. For most marine wood applications above the waterline, the one-part Clear Varnish or Woodfinish Gloss systems deliver an ideal balance of performance and workability.
Built for Wood That Faces the Elements
Epifanes recommends applying one or more thinned varnish coats to bare wood first — these penetrating coats provide solid "anchoring" of the total varnish system inside the wood rather than a superficial bond. Build-up coats then form a smooth, mirror-like finish and provide necessary UV protection — and only with sufficient film thickness can a varnish system maintain its high gloss and deliver long-term protection. Whether you're refinishing teak brightwork, protecting a wooden spar, or finishing fine interior woodwork, Epifanes wood varnishes are engineered to deliver professional-grade results coat after coat.
