What Is BBB Chain?

BBB, or Triple B, is a Grade 30 galvanized-steel windlass chain — one of the most popular varieties of anchor chain alongside high-test (Grade 40) and proof coil. It is a low-carbon steel chain designed with short, compact calibrated links suitable for windlasses and general anchoring. The name "BBB" (also written as 3B) refers to its link specification, and while it is classified Grade 30 like proof coil, its shorter link geometry sets it apart in critical ways for boaters.

At one time, BBB was the most popular anchor chain precisely because it is calibrated for windlasses — and its primary attribute is its weight. That weight causes the chain to sag and pull toward the bottom, creating a catenary curve. Most BBB chains are hot-dip galvanized for corrosion protection, though some cheaper options may only be electro-plated. Choosing the Right BBB Chain

The key difference between BBB and other chain types like HT/G43 comes down to dimensions — while both may be labeled as the same size (e.g., 1/4"), their width, length, and pitch can vary greatly. Your windlass gypsy can only accept certain dimensions of chain — it might support 1/4" HT/G43 chain but not 1/4" BBB chain, or vice versa. Always consult your windlass manufacturer's specifications before purchasing to ensure a proper fit. This general-purpose anchor chain features short links for more flexibility and should be tested to twice the working load limit.

Aside from strength, the weight of the chain directly affects the holding power of your anchor. Common BBB weights are: 5/16" BBB at 1.1 lbs/ft, 3/8" BBB at 1.6 lbs/ft, and 1/2" BBB at 2.8 lbs/ft.
