The OMC 0316506 Detent Ball is a genuine OEM replacement component used in the lower gearcase of Johnson and Evinrude outboard and sterndrive engines. This small but critical part is located in the propeller shaft assembly, where it works in conjunction with a detent spring and clutch dog to maintain proper gear engagement in forward and reverse operation.
During lower unit assembly, the detent ball is seated within the propeller shaft and held in place by the detent spring. When the prop shaft is installed, the ball engages a seat in the shift clutch dog, providing the positive locking action needed to keep the gearcase in the selected gear. Proper function of this component is essential for reliable shifting and drivetrain integrity.
