Davis Instruments Wind Speed Indicators
Davis Instruments Wind Speed Indicators: Precision Built for the Real World
When it comes to measuring wind with accuracy and reliability, Davis Instruments stands in a class of its own. For more than 30 years, Davis has earned the trust of meteorologists, researchers, serious weather enthusiasts, and marine professionals by building instruments that perform under the most demanding conditions. Their wind speed indicators are a direct reflection of that legacy — engineered to capture everything from the lightest breeze to a hurricane-force gust without missing a beat.
Two Distinct Technologies, One Standard of Accuracy
Davis Instruments offers two primary approaches to wind speed measurement, each suited to different users and environments.
- Cup Anemometer (SKU 6410): The cornerstone of the Davis wind sensing lineup, this classic three-cup anemometer is designed for the Vantage Pro2 and EnviroMonitor systems. It accurately measures both wind direction and speed, and has been wind-tunnel tested to 200 mph (322 kph). Rugged components stand up to hurricane-force winds, yet are sensitive to the lightest breeze. The wind speed range spans 1 to 200 mph, and the unit features sealed stainless steel ball bearings for long life. It ships with a 40 ft / 12 m cable and includes a one-year manufacturer's warranty.
- Sonic Anemometer (SKU 6415): For those who want cutting-edge technology with zero maintenance, Davis also offers an ultrasonic wind sensor. Using sonic pulses to detect air movement, this anemometer has no moving parts to wear or need maintenance, and accurately measures wind speeds from 0–89 mph (144 kph). It is solar-powered with battery backup and comes complete with mounting hardware, battery, aligning tool, and a 40 ft cable. It integrates seamlessly with Vantage Pro2 and EnviroMonitor Node setups.
Built to Survive — and Proven in the Field
Davis wind speed sensors aren't just rated for extreme conditions on paper. In 2017, a Vantage Pro2 on St. Barts survived the front eyewall of Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 hurricane, and reported the highest wind speed ever recorded by a personal weather station on the Weather Underground network. That kind of real-world validation sets Davis apart from competitors.
Vantage Pro2 sensors are NIST-traceable and are suitable for professional weather data reporting — a standard of quality rarely found outside of institutional meteorology equipment.
Flexible Integration with the Vantage Pro2 Ecosystem
One of the key strengths of Davis wind speed indicators is how naturally they integrate into a broader monitoring system. The anemometer can be used with a Vantage Pro2 sensor suite, as a standalone wind station with a Sensor Transmitter and WeatherLink Live, or in an EnviroMonitor system. The anemometer can be mounted up to 40 ft / 12 m from the rest of the sensor suite for flexible siting. Wind data can be transmitted to a WeatherLink Console and pushed to the WeatherLink Cloud for remote monitoring from any device.
Who Uses Davis Wind Speed Indicators?
Davis wind sensors are trusted across a wide spectrum of applications — from backyard weather stations and agricultural operations to marine environments and research institutions. Whether you need a replacement sensor for an existing Vantage Pro2 setup or are building out a new monitoring network, Davis delivers the precision and durability the job demands.
