Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winches: American-Made Muscle
When it comes to dependable electric winch power, few names carry the legacy and engineering credibility of Dutton-Lainson. For nearly 140 years, this Nebraska-based manufacturer has been building products that hard-working people rely on — and their electric winch lineup is a direct expression of that heritage. For nearly 140 years, Dutton-Lainson has been manufacturing high-quality products, and by 1965 had become the largest manufacturer of manual hand winches in the world. That winch-making DNA runs deep in every StrongArm electric unit they produce today.
The StrongArm Series: Built Around Real-World Performance
Dutton-Lainson's flagship electric winch line is the StrongArm series, available in both 12V DC and 120V AC configurations to cover a wide range of hauling and pulling applications. The versatile StrongArm electric winches provide load-moving muscle with just the push of a button or switch, with rated load capacities up to 4,500 lb. in double-line operation, making quick work of difficult loading and pulling jobs.
One of the standout engineering choices in the StrongArm design is the use of a spur gear system rather than a planetary gear setup. A planetary gear system generates much more heat and draws more amps from the power source; because the motor and gears are attached directly to the spool, heat build-up transfers directly to the drum and cable. In contrast, the StrongArm's spur gear system is much more efficient, gives off less heat, and draws fewer amps. For users who need to run a winch repeatedly in a single session — loading boats, moving equipment, or managing rolling loads — this thermal efficiency is a meaningful real-world advantage.
Safety and Control Features That Set Them Apart
StrongArm DC electric winches feature a high-torque 12V motor with circuit-breaker overload protection, as well as both a dynamic motor brake and an automatic mechanical friction brake to securely hold the load. The controlled freewheeling clutch is another key differentiator: the clutch release allows you to pay out the load in neutral while still controlling it with the clutch mechanism — other winches can only freewheel with no load on the winch — and the clutch lever automatically returns to a locked position when released.
Other standard features include power-in and power-out operation, a 50' galvanized aircraft cable, a pulley block with snap hook, and an emergency crank handle in case of power loss. Select models also include a built-in remote control with a 10' cord for added operator convenience and safety distance.
AC and DC Options for Every Setting
The StrongArm lineup spans both power types to suit different working environments. The SA-Series DC models connect to a 12V vehicle battery via an included wiring harness, making them ideal for boat trailers and mobile applications. The SA-Series AC models run on 120V household current, a practical choice for workshop, garage, or stationary pulling setups. While a segment of the market has moved to often-substandard import products in recent years, Dutton-Lainson has remained committed to truly dependable products manufactured in the central U.S.A.
Repair Parts to Keep You Running
Dutton-Lainson also stocks a full range of electric winch repair parts to support their units long after purchase. From replacement clutch components to cables and mounting hardware, the availability of genuine OEM parts means a StrongArm winch can deliver years of service without requiring a full replacement. This parts-forward approach reflects the brand's commitment to longevity over disposability.
