How the Lightning Master™ Works
Unlike a traditional lightning rod — which simply provides a preferred path for a strike to follow — the Forespar Lightning Master™ takes a fundamentally different approach. By employing the point-discharge principle, the Lightning Master continually leaks off the lightning-causing ground potential in low amperages over a long period of time, instead of the short-duration, high-amperage discharge occurring with a lightning strike.
This is the same technology from the same manufacturer that is successfully employed to protect commercial broadcast and television towers from direct lightning strikes. In practical terms, the Lightning Master™ lowers exposure to a direct lightning strike by controlling the conditions that trigger a direct strike — specifically, by reducing the build-up of static ground charge and retarding the formation of the ion "streamers" which complete the path for a lightning strike.
Installation & Compatibility
The lightweight (5.2 oz.), 21" long Static Dissipater mounts to the masthead and extends vertically above all other masthead equipment. The dissipater attaches with two machine screws to the masthead and is suitable for both power and sailboats. On powerboats with multiple high points, more than one dissipater may be needed to bleed off the ground charge from the radar arch, cabin top, or tuna tower.
Proper installation also means ensuring a continuous electrical path. The dissipater must be electrically bonded to the boat and provided with a continuous, unbroken electrical path to ground (water), with a good metal-to-metal bond between the dissipater and the metallic fitting to which it is mounted.
