Pelican Products Flashlights: Built for Demanding Work
Pelican Products is best known for its protective cases, but lighting has been part of the company since the beginning. Pelican Products was founded in 1976 by Dave and Arline Parker in Torrance, California, and a Navy order for a rugged dive light helped establish the company in the flashlight business. That heritage still shapes how Pelican approaches flashlights: durable bodies, sealed construction, and features designed around real-world professional use.
A Lineage of Rugged Lighting
Pelican introduced the SabreLite in 1981 for underwater military applications, and an updated LED version, the 2010 SabreLite, is still offered today. Its lightweight, submersible body uses a twist on/off lens shroud for protection against water ingress. In 1984 the company received its first safety certifications, adding features such as pressure relief valves and battery polarity protection so lights could be used in potentially combustible environments. That work continues in the StealthLite and other safety-certified lines that suit industrial, mining, and hazardous-location tasks.
Tactical and Duty Flashlights
Pelican's tactical range grew out of collaboration with law enforcement. The 7060, introduced in 2007, was developed with the Los Angeles Police Department. The company also says it was the first flashlight manufacturer to create a dual-switch design, and that model was its first high-performance light to use LED technology. Current tactical models include the 2350, 2360, 2370, 7000, 7100, 7600, and 8060 series. The 7600 is built around the CR123 battery in a compact, durable body, with a rechargeable USB-C version also available.
Specialty Designs Beyond the Handheld Light
Pelican's flashlight catalog is broad. Besides straight-body handheld lights, it includes:
- Right angle lights such as the 3410 and 3415 series, which clip to a vest or belt for hands-free work
- Headlamps including the HeadsUp Lite and 2700-series models
- Photoluminescent lights that glow in the dark for emergency use
- Compact lights from keychain-size models to everyday pocket flashlights like the 1910 and 1920
Pelican also offers the ModLight, an in-case light for its Protector, Air, Storm, and Vault cases.
What to Consider When Choosing
Start with the job. A mechanic working under a vehicle may prefer a flex-neck or right angle light, while a roadside emergency kit or a boat's storage locker calls for a waterproof, impact-resistant pocket light. Check the power source (disposable AA, AAA, or CR123 cells versus rechargeable USB-C), the available modes, and any safety certification if the light will be used around fuel vapors or other flammable atmospheres. Model details vary, so confirm each light's rating and specifications before buying.
