Mirka Abrasives for Precision Surface Finishing
Mirka has been developing abrasives in Finland since 1943, and its sanding products are a staple in bodyshops, marine refinishing, woodworking, and composite repair. Rather than treating abrasives as a commodity, Mirka engineers the backing, grain, and coating together so each product suits a specific job, from stripping old paint to preparing a surface for a mirror-grade clearcoat. Abranet: The Dust-Free Innovation
Mirka's best-known abrasive technology is Abranet, a net-style sanding material launched in 2001. Instead of a solid paper or film backing, Abranet uses a polyamide mesh with thousands of tiny openings. When paired with a sander and extraction system, dust is pulled away through the net as you work. That keeps the abrasive surface from loading up, extends disc life, and leaves a cleaner work area. Abranet is intended for dry sanding by machine or by hand on filler, primer, lacquer, and composite materials, and it is offered in a wide grit span.
The family extends to tougher variants. Abranet Ace is designed for demanding surface conditioning and repair work, while Abranet HD uses a heavier-duty mesh backing for jobs such as paint stripping and coarse putty sanding. Autonet adapts the same concept for rail and transport refinishing.
Paper-Backed Workhorses: Gold and Q.Silver
For conventional sanding, Mirka's paper-backed ranges remain popular. Gold is a latex-coated paper abrasive with a semi-open coating and a stearate treatment that helps resist clogging and pilling, making it a versatile choice for high-speed sanding across many materials. Q.Silver uses a flexible, impregnated latex paper backing with a fully resin-bonded construction, giving it the heat endurance needed for aggressive stock removal and down-to-metal work. Q.Silver Ace adds ceramic grain for tougher universal sanding, and Mirka offers these in plain and multi-hole disc patterns to match common sander pad layouts.
Abralon for Fine Finishing
Abralon is a foam-backed abrasive that has been patented for roughly three decades. Its flexible construction conforms to both flat and profiled surfaces, and an open structure lets air and water flow through for cleaner sanding. It is recommended for fine sanding, typically used wet, which makes it a go-to for removing orange peel and dust nibs before polishing.
Choosing the Right Mirka Abrasive
- Backing type: net for dust extraction, paper for general sanding, film for consistent scratch patterns, foam for contoured finishing.
- Grit: lower P-numbers for shaping and stripping, higher numbers for pre-polish refinement.
- Hole pattern: match the disc to your sander's pad and extraction setup.
- Dry or wet use: Abranet suits dry sanding, while Abralon is often used wet.
Because Mirka develops and produces abrasives, tools, and polishing compounds under one roof, its discs, sheets, and pads are designed to work as part of a complete sanding system, a practical advantage when you want predictable, repeatable results from rough prep to final finish.
