What Are Mold Release Products?
Mold release products — sometimes called parting agents — are specialty chemical compounds applied to a mold surface before casting or laminating, ensuring that the finished part can be cleanly separated without bonding to the tool. A mold release, also known as a parting agent, is used to allow parts to be easily removed from the original plug or mold, while also adding a durable surface finish to the part.
Whether you're fabricating a custom fiberglass body panel, laying up a composite repair, or working with gel coat on a marine hull, skipping or skimping on mold release is one of the fastest ways to ruin a project — and potentially destroy a valuable mold. A good release agent minimizes sticking, preserves mold surfaces, and helps you achieve clean, repeatable releases — whether you're working with epoxy, polyurethane, plaster, concrete, or metal.
Types of Mold Release Products
Not all mold release agents are created equal. Choosing the right type depends on your mold material, the resin system you're using, and how many pulls you need to make:
- Paste Wax (Carnauba-Based): Carnauba wax remains the best mold release for complex parts, large structures, or flat panels. Silicone-based waxes should be avoided, as they are very difficult to remove and secondary bonding or coating will suffer. Liquid waxes often underperform, making carnauba paste waxes the recommended choice.
- PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) Release: PVA mold release is a water-soluble liquid that forms a smooth parting film, allowing a glossy finish on molded surfaces, and also promotes the complete cure of polyester gel coat. It is typically sprayed on and is especially effective when used in combination with a paste wax base coat.
- Industrial/Semi-Permanent Coatings: Industrial mold release waxes are designed for high-volume, high-precision environments where consistency, speed, and repeatability are critical — often used in the manufacturing of automotive, aerospace, marine, and construction composites.
Why Mold Release Matters
In manufacturing and repair environments where precision and surface quality matter — such as composites, fiberglass, epoxy, and thermoset molding — the choice of mold release agent can make or break your production efficiency. A proper release agent not only prevents the part from sticking, but also protects the mold itself from wear, resin buildup, and surface degradation over time. In mold release applications, the agent creates a thin and uniform coating on the mold surface, allowing the material to be released cleanly without sticking.
What to Look for When Shopping
Before purchasing a mold release product, consider the following key factors:
- Compatibility: Match the release agent to your resin system (epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester, polyurethane). Avoid silicone-based waxes, as they are very difficult to remove from the finished project, and secondary bonding or coating will suffer badly.
- Surface Finish: Look for thermal stability (withstanding high curing temperatures), quality surface finish (delivering smooth, defect-free surfaces), and ease of application (spreading evenly and buffing cleanly).
- Number of Pulls: New or freshly made molds typically require more coats than seasoned molds. PVA and paste wax are often used together for the best results on new tooling.
