Teleflex Replacement Cables for Boat Steering and Engine Control
Teleflex built its reputation in marine controls, and replacement cables are where that heritage matters most. A steering or shift cable is a wear item. It runs through bilges, bulkheads and tight bends, exposed to salt, moisture and constant flexing. When one stiffens, binds or develops slop, the boat feels less predictable and less safe. Teleflex marine cables have long been a go-to choice for restoring that feel, and many are now sold under the SeaStar name.
A Brand Name with Deep Marine Roots
The company's marine business was founded in 1943 and based in Litchfield, Illinois. It was later rebranded as SeaStar Solutions in 2013 and became part of the Dometic Group in 2017. Because of that lineage, you will see both names on cables, helms and part numbers. Many current SeaStar cables are direct replacements for older Teleflex versions, so legacy part numbers remain a reliable starting point when matching a cable to your boat. Always confirm the connection style before choosing.
Steering Cable Types
Teleflex-pattern mechanical steering cables fall into two main families:
- Rotary steering cables: The SSC62 QCII cable is a single-station push/pull assembly. It is designed to fit most Teleflex rotary systems from 1968 to the present, and it replaces both Safe-T QC (Quick Connect) and NFB (No Feedback) cables. It has an abrasion-resistant HDPE jacket and stainless steel output ends. Older threaded-spigot helms need a Quick Connect helm converter.
- Rack and pinion cables: These suit back-mount rack steering systems and come in a range of lengths. The HPS rack cables use a TFXtreme core, intended to deliver responsive steering with minimal lost motion.
TFXtreme Control Cables
For throttle and shift duty, the TFXtreme line is the one to know. These engine control cables are engineered for corrosion resistance, consistent performance and low friction. The line includes models that replace familiar cable families, such as the CCX633 for 33C and 3300 series cables, and the CCX179 for Mercury-style controls. Other part numbers cover OMC Johnson and Evinrude applications, so there are options for a wide range of engines and control boxes.
Choosing the Right Replacement Cable
- Measure carefully. Cable length is specified in feet, and the right size depends on the actual routing from helm to engine, not just the boat's overall length.
- Match the system. Rotary, rack and no-feedback cables are not interchangeable, and neither are steering and control cables.
- Check end fittings. Confirm the helm connection and engine-end hardware, and consider a cable hardware kit if fittings are worn.
- Look for standards compliance. Quality marine steering cables are built to meet ABYC, ISO and NMMA requirements.
