Uflex Rotary Steering for Mechanical Boat Control
Rotary steering is one of the most popular mechanical steering layouts for outboard-powered boats, and Uflex has built a focused lineup around it. A rotary system pairs a helm mounted behind the dash with a flexible steering cable that runs to the engine. Turning the wheel spins a gear set inside the helm, which pushes and pulls the cable core. Uflex offers complete kits as well as individual helms and cables, so you can repower an existing boat or refresh a worn steering system without redesigning your dash.
Fourtech and the Planetary Gear Helm
The standout in the Uflex rotary range is the Fourtech system. It features the T91 helm with a planetary gear design, built for performance, flexibility and durability. The practical benefits are laid out clearly in the product literature: the planetary layout offers six points of contact for less lost motion, even distribution of torque, and a mechanical advantage that keeps steering balanced when the engine is under torque load. It is specifically designed for low to mid horsepower four-stroke engines and delivers 4.2 turns lock to lock. Those engines are heavier than older two-strokes, which is why steering effort and feedback matter more than they once did.
Installation is another selling point. The helm is centered on the main drive shaft, so it needs less room behind the dash. It is a direct drop-in replacement for competing systems and requires no new holes. Uflex positions it for pontoons, bay boats and ski boats. Complete Fourtech kits are sold in a range of cable lengths and in black finish options, and each package includes the T91 helm, an X34 90-degree bezel and a highly flexible M90 Mach cable.
Single-Cable Helms for Every Dash Layout
Beyond Fourtech, Uflex builds a family of standalone rotary helms for different clearance and station requirements:
- T71FC: A single-cable helm with a fast-connect design, stainless steel cable output ends, corrosion-resistant materials, and a standard 3/4-inch tapered shaft, suited to installations where clearance is limited.
- T85 Compact: Made for installations where the wheel shaft length must be shorter than the T71FC, with a 3.3-inch shaft.
- T91: Exceeds EN 28848 and ABYC P17 safety standards, and is also available in a package with Fourtech.
- T93 Zero Torq: Designed for high-performance, high-efficiency applications with minimal feedback and a compact mounting profile.
- T101 Tilt Helm: A single-cable tilt helm for boats where an adjustable wheel angle improves driver comfort.
- Dual-cable helms such as the T72FC and T82FC: Options for setups that call for a dual-cable arrangement, including tilt versions.
Cables, Kits and Fittings
The helm is only half the system. Uflex also supplies quick-connect rotary steering cables in a wide span of lengths, along with Rotech rotary kits that bundle helm and cable together. Adjustable T-fittings and autopilot or second-station fittings kits round out the installation hardware. When choosing a cable, match its length to your boat's helm-to-engine run and confirm compatibility with the helm model, since the T85, for example, uses the M66 steering cable.
Shopping Tips
- Check your engine's horsepower against the steering system's rating. Mechanical rotary steering should not be paired with engines that exceed the boat's maximum horsepower rating.
- Measure the space behind your dash before choosing between a standard, compact or Fourtech helm.
- Confirm your wheel's taper and diameter. The helms listed here use a 3/4-inch tapered shaft, and a 16-inch maximum wheel diameter is typical. Wheels are usually sold separately.
