What Are Marine Deck Pipes?
A deck pipe is one of those small but essential pieces of hardware that keeps your anchoring system running smoothly and safely. Deck pipes provide a passage through which an anchor's chain and rope run while passing into or out of a boat's chain locker. Mounted flush with the deck near the bow, they serve as the critical interface between the world above deck and the anchor locker below — guiding the rode cleanly through the hull without chafing, tangling, or letting water flood in.
Most deck pipes also include a cap or cover to seal the opening when the anchor is stowed. Some caps are hinged and snap down flat, while others use a lanyard to keep them from going overboard. This weather-sealing function is just as important as the rode-guiding one: an unsealed deck pipe in rough conditions is an open invitation for water intrusion into the chain locker — and ultimately into the bilge.
Why Deck Pipes Matter for Your Anchoring System
Once your windlass retrieves the anchor chain, that chain has to go somewhere. It runs down through the deck pipe and piles neatly into the chain locker below. Without a properly sized and well-installed deck pipe, chain and rope can bind, fray against raw fiberglass edges, or jam mid-retrieval — exactly the kind of failure you don't want when you're dragging in an anchorage or trying to get underway quickly.
Rope and chain pipes also protect the anchor rode from damage caused by rubbing against the boat's hull or deck, which can weaken line and reduce its working strength. They also help prevent tangling and twisting that can make it difficult to retrieve the anchor in rough conditions.

When sizing a deck pipe, consider the diameter of your anchor chain and rode combination. The opening must be large enough to pass both the chain links and any shackles or thimbles at connection points. A too-narrow deck pipe will cause frustrating jams at the worst possible moments.
