What Are Hawse Pipes?
A hawse pipe is a fundamental piece of marine deck hardware that serves as a guided passageway for your anchor chain or rode as it travels from the windlass, through the deck, and down into the anchor locker below. The main function of the hawse pipe is to guide the chain from deck level to outside the shell plating. Without a properly fitted hawse pipe, the chain can chafe against raw deck edges, jam unpredictably, or cause damage to the boat's hull structure during anchoring operations.
Why Hawse Pipes Matter for Your Anchoring System
Anchoring is one of the most critical seamanship skills, and every component in the system plays a role in keeping your vessel safe. The rode makes a full 180° wrap around the chain wheel and feeds through a deck pipe into the anchor locker at a 90° turn. The hawse pipe is also used to center the line from the bow of the boat to the center of the drum when the hatch opening is off center, when there is no access point to the drum, or when there is no hatch.
