What Are Rail Hinges?

Rail hinges are a critical piece of hardware for anyone who relies on a bimini top, dodger, or similar cover system on their boat or RV. Rail hinges serve as the pivoting connection point between a cover's frame and the vessel's railing, allowing the top to fold forward or backward when not in use — all without requiring you to disassemble the railing itself. For lighter-duty applications, nylon or polymer fittings can also be a practical choice. Nylon fittings are impervious to rust, but they are not as strong as stainless fittings and tend to deteriorate over time from UV and weather exposure; stainless fittings are worth the added cost for larger tops, higher speeds, rougher water, and more frequent use.

Sizing and Compatibility

Before purchasing a rail hinge, knowing your railing diameter is essential. The most common tubing sizes are 7/8" O.D. and 1" O.D. round aluminum or stainless steel, with 1" square aluminum tubing also common on pontoon boats.
