What Are Steering & Throttle Mounts?
At the heart of every well-rigged boat or RV helm is a system of mounts and brackets that hold your steering and throttle controls securely in place. Steering and throttle mounts are the structural hardware that anchor your control boxes, helm assemblies, and throttle levers to the console, gunwale, or coaming of your vessel. Without a solid, properly positioned mount, even the highest-quality throttle or steering control cannot perform reliably — and on the water, that reliability is non-negotiable.
A boat throttle control manages engine speed and gear selection through a helm-mounted lever or control box, connecting directly to the engine via throttle and shift cables. The mount that holds this assembly in place must withstand constant vibration, marine-grade moisture exposure, and the physical forces generated every time you shift gears or adjust engine speed. A loose or misaligned mount can translate to inconsistent gear engagement, throttle slippage, or dangerous play in your controls.
Types of Steering & Throttle Mounts
Mounts in this category are generally designed around one of two installation styles that correspond to how your control box interfaces with your helm:
- Side-Mount Brackets: These install on the side of the helm console or coaming and are common on smaller boats, bay boats, and layouts where helm space is limited. Side-mount configurations offer easy reach and a low-profile installation.
- Top-Mount (Binnacle) Brackets: These position the control box on top of the console surface and are commonly found on center consoles, dual consoles, and larger outboard boats. Top-mount designs often accommodate additional instrument cutouts and switch panels.
- Gunwale Mounting Brackets: Purpose-built for aluminum and fiberglass boats where the throttle control must be mounted on the gunwale rail rather than a traditional console, these brackets provide a flat, vertical mounting surface to secure the control box cleanly and securely.
- Steering Console Mounts: Full console mounting systems that provide a central station for the steering helm, instrument gauges, and switches — keeping everything organized and within reach of the operator.
Why the Right Mount Matters
The quality and fit of your steering or throttle mount has a direct impact on your safety and control. Mounting hardware that is improperly sized, made from non-marine-grade materials, or installed without a flat, stable surface can allow vibration and flex to work hardware loose over time. Marine environments are especially demanding: salt encourages corrosion, temperature swings affect material integrity, and constant wave-induced vibration can fatigue inferior fasteners and brackets.
When selecting a mount, consider your boat's hull material (aluminum vs. fiberglass), the profile of your console or gunwale, whether your control box is a side-mount or top-mount design, and the weight and size of the control unit itself. Aluminum construction is the preferred choice for most marine applications, offering a balance of corrosion resistance, strength, and light weight.
Installation & Maintenance Tips
Proper installation ensures that throttle and shift cables maintain correct tension and that safety lock alignment is preserved throughout the life of the system. Regularly check mounting hardware by tightening bolts and brackets to prevent any looseness or shifting during operation. Inspect the mount and surrounding surfaces for corrosion, especially after saltwater use, and apply marine-grade sealant at any penetrations through the hull or deck to prevent water intrusion. A well-maintained mount extends the service life of your entire steering and throttle system and keeps your helm feeling solid and responsive season after season.
