Sherwood Pump Engine Cooling Pumps & Accessories
Sherwood Pump: The Benchmark in Marine Engine Cooling
When it comes to keeping a marine engine running at safe operating temperatures, few names carry more weight than Sherwood Pump. Founded more than 115 years ago, Sherwood is recognized as the leading manufacturer of engine cooling pumps and related components. That reputation was built one cooling circuit at a time — starting in the workshops of Detroit and proving itself across every sea since.
Sherwood's beginnings trace back to 1903, when William Sherwood and his friend David Buick operated a copper brass plumbing business. They parted ways as Buick pursued automobiles, and Sherwood developed the business into a foundry and machine shop, sought out by Henry Ford, the Dodge brothers, and others serving Detroit's booming auto industries. In the 1920s, entrepreneur Chris Smith helped launch the inboard-powered pleasure boat industry, and his company Chris-Craft incorporated William Sherwood's expertise, resulting in the first seawater pumps built specifically for marine inboard engines.
With the advent of World War II, Sherwood became a major supplier of marine engine coolant pumps for the U.S. Navy — and on June 6, 1944, a Chris-Craft personnel carrier powered by a Sherwood pump was the first allied landing craft to hit the beaches at Normandy. During this era, Sherwood also supplied pumps to marine engines from Buda, Caterpillar, Cummins, Gray, Hercules, and Packard. Those wartime partnerships laid the groundwork for decades of OEM relationships that define the brand today.
What Sherwood Offers in Engine Cooling Pumps & Accessories
Browse the Engine Cooling Pumps & Accessories lineup from Sherwood and you'll find a comprehensive ecosystem of products built around one goal: reliable raw water flow to protect your engine. Sherwood cooling pumps are available in flange-mounted, pulley-driven, and crankshaft-mounted configurations, giving boaters and mechanics the right mount style for virtually any inboard application.
Sherwood cooling pumps are engine-specific and manufactured in the United States, designed to replace your OEM pump while meeting all of the performance requirements set by the engine manufacturer. This OEM-grade precision is what separates Sherwood from generic alternatives — each pump is engineered and tested for the engine it serves.
The product lineup extends well beyond the pump body itself. A comprehensive range of Sherwood pump accessories includes impellers, pulleys, service and repair kits, shafts, seals, gaskets and O-rings, bodies and housings, bearings, cam plates, wear plates, and cam liners. Whether you're performing routine seasonal maintenance or a full pump overhaul, Sherwood parts are available to handle the job without sourcing components from multiple suppliers.
Sherwood strainers are designed to be durable and easy to clean, and thanks to their non-corrosive construction, they serve reliably for an extended service life. The seawater pump is the heart of the marine engine, supplying continuous water flow to maintain consistent temperatures — and overheating is the number one cause of premature engine wear. Investing in a properly specified Sherwood pump is one of the most important steps any boat owner can take to protect their engine investment.
Today, as part of Pentair, the Sherwood brand has taken its history of quality design and manufacturing to become the seawater pump of choice for many of the most prestigious engine manufacturers around the world. With 17 products in this category spanning raw water pump assemblies, impellers, repair kits, and mounting accessories, Sherwood's engine cooling lineup delivers century-proven engineering for modern marine applications.
