Awlgrip Specialty Primers: The Foundation of a Flawless Finish
Awlgrip is best known for mirror-like yacht topcoats, but any professional applicator will tell you the gloss is only as good as the surface beneath it. That is where Awlgrip's specialty primers come in. Developed as part of AkzoNobel's yacht coatings portfolio, these two-component epoxy primers are engineered to seal, fill and protect the substrate so that Awlgrip topcoats lay down smooth and stay bonded for years.
The Awlgrip Primer System
Awlgrip approaches priming as a system rather than a single can. The range includes 545 Epoxy Primer, High Build Epoxy Primer and Ultra Build, each with a distinct job:
- 545 Epoxy Primer: A multi-use epoxy sealing primer used to seal undercoats and surfacing primers in preparation for finish application. It can be used above and below the waterline and applied by spray, brush or roller. It is designed for corrosion resistance and adhesion on steel, aluminum, wood and fiberglass. It is offered in white and gray bases.
- High Build Epoxy Primer: An epoxy surfacing primer used where high build and filling is required above the waterline. It is the go-to choice for leveling sanding scratches and minor imperfections before painting.
- Ultra Build: A two-component epoxy primer with excellent print-through resistance above the waterline.
Other surfacers in the family, such as Awlquik sanding surfacer, round out the system for fairing-heavy refits.
Why Epoxy Primers Matter on a Boat
Marine surfaces face constant moisture, UV and flexing. Two-part epoxy chemistry, where a base is mixed with a converter just before use, cures into a tough, adherent film that resists corrosion on metal hulls and seals porous fairing compounds on fiberglass and wood. Because the primer is the bridge between the substrate and the topcoat, it directly affects gloss, fairness and long-term adhesion.
Awlgrip's primers are formulated to work with the brand's own finishes. The 545 primer can be overcoated with Awlgrip and Awlgrip HS topcoats, Awlcraft 2000, Awlcraft 3000, Awlcraft SE and Awlgrip HDT, as well as Awlgrip epoxy surfacers including Awlquik, High Build and Ultra Build. Keeping primer and topcoat within one system takes the guesswork out of compatibility.
Application Tips Worth Knowing
- Prep matters: Aluminum should be sandblasted or ground to clean metal or chemically treated, steel blasted to near-white standard, gelcoat sanded with 100-150 grit paper, and bare wood smooth sanded.
- Mix carefully: 545 is mixed one part base to one part converter by volume, and may be reduced up to 25% for spraying.
- Respect recoat windows: For High Build, self-recoat is possible after 2 hours, and the maximum no-sand window is 24 hours. Always check the current technical data sheet for your product and conditions.
