About Weigh Safe: Towing Safety Engineered from the Ground Up
Every seasoned tower knows the anxiety of wondering whether a load is balanced correctly before pulling onto the highway. Weigh Safe was founded in 2014 in Lindon, Utah, with a singular mission: eliminate that guesswork entirely. By integrating a patented hydraulic tongue weight scale directly into the hitch itself, the company forever changed how drivers approach towing safety.
The concept was immediately recognized as a breakthrough. In its founding year, Weigh Safe earned the Best New Tools and Equipment Product award at SEMA — the automotive industry's largest trade show — a distinction that signaled to the towing world that something genuinely new had arrived. Today, Weigh Safe holds the distinction of being the only trailer hitch manufacturer in the United States with this patented built-in scale technology.
Why Tongue Weight Matters
Tongue weight — the downward force a loaded trailer exerts on the hitch ball — should typically fall between 10% and 15% of a trailer's gross weight. Too little, and a trailer can sway dangerously; too much, and the tow vehicle loses steering and braking efficiency. Before Weigh Safe, measuring tongue weight meant hauling out a separate scale, hunting down a commercial weigh station, or simply guessing. Weigh Safe's built-in gauge reads the moment a trailer is coupled, giving drivers an immediate, accurate measurement before they ever move an inch.
The Weigh Safe Product Lineup
The brand's flagship offering is its line of Trailer Hitch Ball Mounts, available in both aircraft-grade aluminum and high-strength steel. Drop lengths range from 4" to 10", with receiver shank sizes of 2", 2.5", and 3" to accommodate virtually any tow vehicle. The iconic 180 Turnover Hitch adds a double-sided ball platform that makes switching between ball sizes a tool-free, seconds-long operation. All Ball Mounts and Receivers in the Weigh Safe catalog share the same signature built-in hydraulic gauge and are constructed from corrosion-resistant materials for long-term durability.
For drivers towing heavier loads — such as large travel trailers or fifth-wheels — Weigh Safe expanded its lineup with the True Tow™ Trailer Weight Distribution Kit. This system goes further than a standard ball mount by measuring both tongue weight and distributed tongue weight, featuring a Live Adjustment System that allows real-time fine-tuning without removing the head assembly. A companion True Tow app walks users through setup and calculates the precise distributed tongue weight target for a given rig.
To complete the towing ecosystem, Weigh Safe also offers Trailer Hitch Locks designed to be keyed alike with the rest of the hitch hardware. This means a single key secures the hitch locking pin, coupler latch lock, and padlock — a convenience feature that reflects the brand's commitment to thoughtful, integrated design.
Materials and Build Quality
Weigh Safe builds its aluminum hitches from 6061-T6 billet aluminum — the same aircraft-grade alloy used in aerospace applications — delivering strength that exceeds hollow-steel competitors at a lighter overall weight. Steel variants use high-strength, hardened steel with a black powder-coat finish for corrosion resistance. Stainless steel tow balls across the lineup resist rust and maintain a clean appearance over years of hard use.
Whether you're towing a boat to the lake, hauling an ATV to the trails, or pulling a travel trailer across the country, Weigh Safe's patented technology ensures every journey starts with the right numbers — and the confidence that comes with them.
