Raymarine Marine Electronics at the Helm
Raymarine's marine electronics are built around a simple idea: the helm should feel unified. Its engineering lineage stretches back to the first commercial fathometer in 1923 and through Raytheon's marine division , and the modern brand was formed in 2001 through a management buyout of Raytheon's marine division . Today that heritage shows up in networked displays, radar, sonar, and cameras designed to work together. For a broader look at the manufacturer, visit the Raymarine brand page, or browse the full Marine Electronics category to compare options from other makers.
Axiom and Element Chartplotters
Raymarine splits its multifunction displays into two families. Axiom units are all-in-one GPS chartplotters with fishfinder, radar, and network options , while Element models are keypad-controlled chartplotters with built-in sonar for fishing, cruising, and exploring . The current Axiom 2 generation adds more processing power; for example, the Axiom 2 Pro S line offers HybridTouch control and fast 6-core processing. HybridTouch pairs a touchscreen with physical keys, which many boaters prefer in rough water or when wearing gloves.
Both families run the LightHouse operating system, which keeps menus and workflows consistent whether you are on a small center console or a larger cruiser. Axiom displays can also be linked together: use one as a single GPS chartplotter or create a network of multiple displays with a simple RayNet cable connection.
Sonar for Anglers
Sonar imaging is a major reason anglers look at Raymarine. Element HV models feature HyperVision and RealVision 3D sonar for high-resolution imaging in shallow water, while Axiom units support a broader range including RealVision MAX, RealVision 3D, and traditional CHIRP sonar. Matching the display to the transducer and the water you fish is the most important decision in this part of the lineup.
Radar and Thermal Integration
Raymarine was an early adopter of solid-state radar in the recreational market. As part of FLIR, it introduced solid-state and CHIRP pulse compression radar technology. The Cyclone line is a good example: a 55 watt open array with CHIRP Pulse Compression, available with a 3, 4, or 6-foot antenna. The wider radar family also includes Quantum, Magnum, and HD Radome options. Raymarine's FLIR parentage also means thermal cameras integrate with Axiom chartplotters, which is valuable for night running and spotting debris or other vessels in low visibility.
Networking and Charts
A multi-device helm depends on good plumbing. Raymarine uses RayNet ethernet cables for the Axiom network and SeaTalk NG cables and backbones to connect other Raymarine and NMEA 2000 devices. For navigation data, you can choose Raymarine LightHouse Charts or other chart partners, with vector charts, underwater bathymetry, satellite overlays and automatic routing.
What to Consider When Shopping
- Display size and control: touch, keypad, or HybridTouch depending on your boat and conditions.
- Sonar needs: CHIRP for general depth and fish finding; RealVision or HyperVision for detailed structure imaging.
- Radar compatibility: confirm that your display supports your chosen radar before buying.
- Network wiring: plan for RayNet and SeaTalk NG connections up front.
- Chart coverage: verify your region is supported by the chart card or subscription you select.
