Seastar Solutions Replacement Cables for Marine Steering and Control
Seastar Solutions is the name that carries forward the engineering legacy of Teleflex Marine. Teleflex Marine announced in February 2013 that it was changing its name to SeaStar Solutions. That heritage matters when you are replacing a worn cable: many boats on the water today were originally rigged with Teleflex components, and most SeaStar cables directly replace older Teleflex versions, though it is always wise to confirm the connection style before you buy.
This page focuses on Seastar Solutions replacement cables. For the company as a whole, visit the Seastar Solutions brand page, or browse the wider Replacement Cables category to compare other makers.
Steering Cable Families
Seastar's steering cables are organized by the type of helm they serve, so matching the cable to your existing system is the first step.
- Safe-T Quick Connect rotary cables (SSC62xx): One cable is designed to fit most Teleflex rotary setups from 1968 to present. It is built for single-station, push/pull rotary systems and replaces both Safe-T QC and NFB applications. The jacket is abrasion-resistant HDPE, and the output ends are stainless steel. Older threaded rotary helms need a quick connect helm converter.
- Rack steering cables (SSC134xx): These cover back mount rack applications, including dual back mount rack cables and rack cables made to replace Morse-style systems.
- Xtreme mechanical steering cables: Designed specifically for Xtreme helms, this cable offers lower backlash and greater efficiency than a standard steering cable. A quick connect feature on both the cable and the spent travel tube makes installation easier.
Control Cables for Throttle and Shift
Beyond steering, Seastar offers a deep range of throttle and shift cables. Control cables transmit throttle and shift input from the helm to the engine, so a sticky or frayed cable shows up directly in how the boat responds. The lineup includes universal 3300/33C and 4300/43 types, 6400/64 types (including a jet boat cable), OEM direct-replacement cables for specific engine makers, and TFXtreme cables. The CCX643 TFXtreme is a universal 6400/64 type with a threaded terminal at each end. Connection kits are also available for ends such as the 3300/33C cables.
Choosing the Right Replacement
- Identify the part number: If possible, find the part number stamped on the plastic jacket of the old cable.
- Measure carefully: If the old cable is gone or unmarked, measure it end to end. The guidance is to measure twice and order once.
- Match the helm: Cable type must suit the rotary, rack or Xtreme helm on the boat. Fittings are not universal across brands.
- Consider NFB helms for outboards: Seastar recommends no-feedback helms for outboards because they lock out propeller torque steering loads and reduce driver fatigue.
Inspection and Replacement Timing
Steering and control cables work in a harsh environment of salt, moisture and constant flexing. A common guideline is to inspect the system annually and replace cables every 5 to 10 years, depending on usage and environment. Stiffness, play at the wheel, or corrosion at the ends are all signs it is time for a new cable. Seastar products are backed by a two-year recreational user warranty against manufacturer defects.
