At the heart of a boat's drivetrain is the propeller shaft — a spinning steel rod that passes through the hull to connect the engine to the propeller. Wherever that shaft exits the hull, water wants to follow. Packing material is the time-tested solution that seals that critical interface, preventing water ingress while still allowing the shaft to rotate freely. Without a properly maintained shaft seal or stuffing box, even a well-built vessel can take on enough water to become a serious safety concern.
Packing material typically comes in the form of braided rope or rings made from materials such as flax, PTFE (Teflon), graphite, or specialized synthetic composites. Each material has its own performance characteristics when it comes to heat tolerance, lubrication requirements, and longevity. Choosing the Right Packing Material
- Flax Packing: A traditional choice that is widely available and easy to work with. Requires periodic adjustment and a slow drip for lubrication.
- PTFE / Teflon Packing: Offers excellent lubricity and chemical resistance with minimal adjustment needed. Works well in both fresh and salt water environments.
- Graphite Packing: Handles high temperatures well and is a common choice for high-speed shafts or applications where extra heat dissipation is needed.
- Synthetic & Composite Packing: Modern blended materials often combine the benefits of multiple compounds for longer service life and reduced maintenance intervals.

A packing puller or hook pick allows you to extract old, embedded packing rings from deep inside the stuffing box without scoring the shaft or housing. Packing cutters and sizing tools help you cut new rings to the exact length needed for a proper lap joint, which is critical for an even seal all the way around the shaft.
