Rub Strakes
What Are Marine Rub Strakes?
Every time a boat rests against a dock, swings on its mooring, or nudges a piling, something has to take the punishment — and that something should not be your gelcoat or hull finish. Rub strakes are short, hardwearing strips of metal mounted to the outside of a boat's hull, cap rails, or gunwales specifically to bear that friction. Rub strakes act as sacrificial guards, absorbing the constant abrasion that dock lines, fender lines, and anchor lines create as they work against the hull under load.
The concept has deep roots in traditional boatbuilding. Historically, a rubbing strake was built just below the sheer strake — thicker and more projecting than surrounding planks — so that it would take the wear of contact with piers and other vessels, sparing the rest of the hull. Today's versions translate that same logic into precision-formed stainless steel hardware that mounts cleanly to modern fiberglass, aluminum, and composite hulls.
Why Rub Strakes Matter
Chafe is one of the most underappreciated sources of boat damage. A dock line under tension, sawing back and forth across a cap rail during a wind event, can wear through gelcoat surprisingly quickly. Anchor lines working over a bow roller or gunwale create similar damage over a season of use. Rub strakes place a polished, hard metal surface exactly where lines bear the most friction, letting the strake wear instead of the hull.
Beyond hull protection, rub strakes also protect the lines themselves — a chafed dock line is a failed dock line. Installing a rub strake at key contact points is one of the most cost-effective pieces of preventive maintenance a boater can perform, preserving both the vessel's structural integrity and its resale value.
What to Look for When Shopping Rub Strakes
- Material: Marine-grade stainless steel (304 or 316) is the standard choice, offering excellent corrosion resistance in both fresh and saltwater environments.
- Size: Rub strakes are typically available in widths from 3/4" to 1" and lengths ranging from 8" to 24". Match the size to the contact zone you need to protect.
- Profile: A hollow-back or low-profile design seats flush against curved hull surfaces, reducing the chance of water intrusion behind the fitting.
- Fastening: Most strakes install with standard #8 screws into the hull or cap rail. Use marine-grade stainless fasteners to prevent galvanic corrosion at the mounting points.
- Finish: A polished finish reduces friction against lines and gives the hardware a clean, professional appearance that complements the rest of the boat's hardware.
Top Brands in Rub Strakes
Taco Metals is the most widely recognized name in marine rub strakes. Taco Metals rub strakes are manufactured from premium marine-grade stainless steel and are engineered to prevent chafing of dock, fender, and anchor lines against cap rails and topsides — making them a go-to choice for yachts and larger vessels with heavy mooring lines.
