Two Rope Styles: 3-Strand and 8-Plait Nylon

Lewmar offers anchor rodes in two primary rope configurations, each suited to different anchoring preferences and locker designs.

• 3-Strand Nylon Rodes: These use ACCO hi-test, hot-dipped galvanized chain and 3-strand nylon twist rope that is chemically treated to remain flexible after constant exposure to salt water and sun, with a special tapered splice allowing a smooth transition from rope to chain.
• 8-Plait Nylon Rodes: The 8-plait rode features a long-lasting rope that resists unraveling and eliminates hocking and kinking, designed to complement the rope-chain gypsies fitted to all Lewmar windlasses. The 8-plait braided configuration also allows for 50% more line in the locker than traditional 3-strand rope, making it ideal for boats with compact anchor lockers.

G4 Chain: Galvanized for Marine-Grade Durability

The chain used in Lewmar rodes is hot-dip-galvanized, protecting it from corrosion, and the smooth rope-to-chain transition allows your windlass to operate smoothly. Each rode features a high-strength, galvanized chain with G4 ratings and is available in various styles and lengths to suit your unique boat. G4 (high-test) chain offers significantly greater strength-to-weight ratio compared to proof coil chain, meaning you can carry more scope without overloading your bow.

Pre-Spliced, Ready to Deploy

Lewmar's Pre-Made Anchor Rode is comprised of a line and chain spliced together, allowing it to be used with most appropriately sized windlasses. The tapered splice design is a key engineering detail: the three-strand tapered eye splice ensures a smooth transition from rope to chain around the windlass gypsy, preventing the snags and jamming that can occur when a bulky splice hits the gypsy drum at speed. Shackles are included with each rode for a direct, secure attachment point at the anchor end.

Sizing Your Rode to Your Windlass

These rodes are engineered for durability in harsh marine environments, resisting wear from salt, sun, and abrasion. When selecting a rode, Lewmar's own guidance recommends matching the chain diameter to your windlass gypsy calibration precisely — chain that is even slightly off-spec can jump the gypsy during retrieval. For safe cruising in all types of conditions, Lewmar recommends multiplying the total weight of your anchor and chain by four; this number should be less than the maximum pull of the windlass selected. Choosing a pre-matched Lewmar rode removes much of this guesswork, since chain calibration and rope diameter are already validated for Lewmar windlass models like the V-series and Pro-series.
