Moeller Portable & Topside Fuel Tanks: Built for the Water
When it comes to keeping your boat fueled safely and reliably, few names carry as much weight as Moeller Marine. For more than 25 years, Moeller Marine Products has been the industry standard in fuel system design and construction, with a reputation built on innovative engineering, quality construction, and award-winning service. Nowhere is that expertise more evident than in their lineup of portable and topside fuel tanks — a category where Moeller has set the benchmark for both recreational boaters and OEM boat builders alike.
What Sets Moeller Topside Tanks Apart
Moeller's approach to above-deck fuel storage is rooted in material science and regulatory compliance. Topside tanks are manufactured from sturdy high-density polyethylene with UV-stabilized resin and feature a withdrawal elbow that rotates 360°, a mechanical direct-sight gauge, and a mechanically vented fuel cap that floats. That rotating 360° elbow is a practical touch that eliminates kinked fuel lines — a common frustration on boats where space is tight and hose routing isn't always straightforward.
For topside tanks, Moeller designed a two-layer tank with cross-linked polyethylene on the outside and an inner layer of nylon. This dual-barrier construction — borrowed directly from Moeller's permanent tank engineering — gives topside tanks an added layer of fuel permeation resistance that goes beyond what single-wall tanks offer.
Moeller's portable fuel tanks are manufactured from high-density polyethylene with ultraviolet inhibitors, and advanced manufacturing techniques provide the highest quality product components available, meeting the "low permeation" standards put in place by EPA/CARB regulations effective January 1, 2011. All portable tanks 12 gallons and under meet current USCG and ABYC standards.
Ethanol Compatibility & Long-Term Durability
Modern marine fuels increasingly contain ethanol blends, which can degrade lesser tank materials over time. Moeller's advanced polyethylene tanks are designed to be compatible with ethanol-blended fuels and to resist degradation in marine environments. Moeller BR tanks, in particular, are manufactured with tough rotationally molded, cross-linked polyethylene plastic that is suited for today's highly corrosive ethanol fuels.
Designed for Real Boats
Moeller's line of topside tanks offers an EPA-certified, low-cost solution for center console, pontoon, deck, and jon boat designs. They are specifically designed for use in Boston Whalers, Carolina Skiff, and Key West bench style, center console, pontoon, deck, and jon boat designs. From compact portable tanks sized for inflatables and dinghies to larger above-deck options for full-size fishing rigs, the lineup covers a wide range of vessel types and fuel capacity needs.
Moeller Marine has furnished fuel systems or components to nearly every boat builder — from bass and ski boats to offshore saltwater fishing. That OEM heritage means Moeller portable and topside tanks are built to the same exacting standards as the tanks that leave the factory floor on brand-new boats.
