Johnson Pumps Electric Bilge Pumps: Engineered Reliability for Every Vessel
When water finds its way into a bilge, the margin between a manageable situation and a serious one is measured in gallons per hour. Johnson Pumps has spent over five decades engineering electric bilge pumps that rise to that challenge — building a lineup trusted by everyone from weekend recreational boaters to demanding commercial mariners.
A Product Line Built for Every Application
One of Johnson Pumps’ key strengths in the electric bilge pump category is the sheer breadth and thoughtful organization of its product range. Rather than offering a single one-size-fits-all solution, Johnson structures its lineup around distinct series, each tuned for a specific use case.
- Cartridge Bilge Pumps (500–1250 GPH): Johnson’s Cartridge series is the workhorse of their lineup. These pumps incorporate a compact, all-in-one motor and impeller unit built around a stainless steel (SS2343) shaft, and they are designed so the pump casing stays permanently attached to the boat and hoses while the cartridge motor can be removed and replaced without tools. The hallmark Dura-Port discharge fittings — included in both straight and 90° elbow configurations — eliminate stress cracking caused by over-tightened hose clamps, a common failure point on competing pumps.
- Heavy Duty Submersible Bilge Pumps (1600–4000 GPH): For larger vessels and high-demand scenarios, Johnson’s Heavy Duty series steps up dramatically. Capacities reach up to 4,000 GPH, and the pumps feature a liquid-cooled 12-pole motor with double ball bearings engineered for extended service life. These pumps are rated to meet and exceed both ISO 8849 and CE marine standards, and are available in 12V and 24V configurations.
- Aqua Void Cartridge Bilge Pumps: Johnson’s newer Aqua Void platform pushes efficiency further with an enhanced motor and high-flow impeller that delivers increased flow rates while conserving energy. Its single-handed access design and innovative reinforced click-in basket make it particularly well-suited for tight bilge spaces, and it comes pre-configured with Johnson’s electronic Ultima Switch for automatic operation.
- Ultima Bilge Automatic Pumps: The Ultima series integrates Johnson’s patented field-effect sensing technology directly into the pump body itself, creating a sleek, compact unit that requires no separate float switch. These pumps are designed for years of reliable, fully automatic service.
The Ultima Switch & Mirus Technology
A standout feature across multiple Johnson pump series is the proprietary Ultima Switch, which uses patented Mirus™ field effect detector cells. Rather than a mechanical float, the Ultima Switch produces micro-electrical fields that sense disruptions caused by rising water levels. The detector is totally sealed and never in direct contact with water, making it highly resistant to corrosion, debris, and oil contamination — common culprits behind float switch failures. The Ultima Switch activates the pump at a 50mm (2") fluid level and deactivates at a 20mm (3/4") level, ensuring the bilge is kept consistently dry without over-cycling.
Why Johnson Pumps Stand Out in Electric Bilge Pumps
Johnson’s intelligent modular approach allows greater interchangeability between component parts, simplifying maintenance and reducing the inventory of spare parts needed aboard. Their water-cooled motors deliver extended service intervals compared to air-cooled designs, and all submersible models are built to handle both fresh water and salt water environments. The Cartridge series carries a 3-year limited warranty, underscoring the confidence Johnson places in their build quality. Whether you’re fitting out a small day sailor, a performance sportfisher, or a working commercial vessel, Johnson Pumps offers an electric bilge pump designed to keep you safe and dry on the water.
