What Are Circuit Breakers and Why Do They Matter?
A circuit breaker is a critical safety device in any electrical system — marine, automotive, or otherwise. Its primary job is to automatically interrupt current flow when a dangerous overload or short circuit occurs, protecting wiring, electronics, and batteries from heat damage or fire. Unlike a fuse, which must be discarded and replaced after a single fault event, a circuit breaker is resettable and reusable, making it a more practical long-term solution for protecting electrical circuits in demanding environments.

How Circuit Breakers Work

A general rule of thumb is to load a breaker to no more than 80% of its rated capacity during continuous operation, which prevents nuisance tripping and extends service life. For trolling motors and branch circuits, a 10A–60A panel-mount breaker is a common choice, while high-demand loads like windlasses or inverters often call for 70A–250A surface-mount units.
